Hello all, I am interested in getting a bug/stone deflector for the hood of a 2019 Tacoma SR.
My primary interest is Hood/Windshield protection. If anyone can share their experiences of how their bug shield works ( or doesn't ) in regards to hood/windshield protection thank you very much. I did do a search and saw some posts in regards to functions but I was not sure If the deflectors changed in design over the last few years. Thank you for any help/comments you can give.

They have their place, but it isn't for keeping bugs off your windshield. I come from the land of the love bug, believe me I gave my fair share of them a shot..
However, if rock chips on the leading edge of your hood are a concern, have at it...

    Avs stick on

Not sure if it actually helps with rocks on the windshield- I still get dinged occasionally (I just stay further back from big rigs and monster tires)
But I like it and that’s all that matters

My AVS stick on flew off after about two months. Half the 3M tape was still on the truck. Was going 85 but what a waste of money.

Not a fan. I'm old enough to remember the flat plexiglass ones. They were as ugly as a mud fence, but they actually deflected stuff. Not sure what reason there could be for the current version. Sorta like curb feelers.

I had an AVS on mine, but removed it simply due to aesthetics. I did replace it with hood protection film from Lamin-X because I like the look of the front end without a huge piece of plastic hovering above it. But to be fair, they are molded to follow the lines of the front end pretty well. It just wasn't for me. I don't see any more bugs after the removal than I did before.

After a bug shield deflected a huge rock on my old highlander, i say why mess with a good thing. It doesnt add to looks, but neither does a huge dent from an wayward rock

I have the no drill screw on AVS shield, it works well, its deflected a couple stones that would have taken out my windshield. It may not be the best looking add-on but it was on sale for $35 and it beats windshield replacement. Our roads in New Mexico are so shitty its almost a must. It doesn't deflect all bugs but I've seen a fair amount of larger beetles smack it and tumble over the cab on the interstate.

I put them on all my vehicles when - usually get the dealer to throw one on with the purchase and OEM only. My 2012 Honda Civic has several gouges where rocks hit and deflected and saved windshield and hood. One gouge is about 1" wide with 2 large grooves when possibly a large flat rock glanced off it.The OEM ones look better and no holes drilled than the cheaper fits all type but they do the job and I will put on all my vehicles. I thought about the clear 3M chip guard at front of hood which probably looks better but won't protect from rocks hitting front of hood like the hood protector does plus I have seen them yellow after a few years. My 2 cents worth anyway

My experience with rocks is that the ones that are going to chip/crack the windshield are the ones that land perpendicular to it. That means a bug shield isn't going to do anything to stop them.
On my 2009 that I had, it was the roof that the really took a beating. The bug shield did deflect a few, but not enough to make it worth putting one on my 2018. When you do lots of freeway driving, the rocks and other junk come from everywhere.

Want a bug shield, like how a bug shield looks, and can afford a bug shield. Go for it and don't look back.
Think it will give you real protection then forget about it.

    I like mine too!

@2001Tacoma. Cheapest place to buy them. Amazon. The one pictured on Amazon is not the one you will get. I bought mine on Amazon and it fits like it should. And if you notice the title, "Hood Protector." These will protect the front 5" of your hood from rocks & bugs.

I like that this version is a textured finish - it matches the same texture as the air dam everyone else removes and it’s low profile. I don’t think I’d like it if it was the shiny black version (same reason I went with the matte black low profile vent visors)

I got mine off Amazon too And I spent extra time to line it up perfectly and enough time to put pressure wherever there was the 3m tape (Florida heat helped here)
