Went to buckle up today and instead of latching in place, an internal plastic clip broke and came out of the buckle. Now my seatbelt doesn't work. Can you buy just the plastic clip? Anyone got a used buckle laying around?

I may be wrong, but believe that seat belts are covered under a 10 year, no miles warranty. Maybe check with local dealer

Cool. I'll call up the dealership tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks

Close, but not quite. Had to look it up myself, straight from the Toyota maintenance and warranty manual.

No good will replacement from the local dealer. Luckily it's only a $40 part, but still interesting Toyota decided to use a plastic piece that's prone to breaking in a safety critical part.

The same thing happen to my drivers side seat yesterday! I just posted in another thread on a discussion about replacing the buckle. Sounds like this is not an uncommon issue. After removing the spring that was jammed, I was able to insert the latch but I had to press the button in first. Seems to be secure but the seat belt warning light stays on and the warning chime comes on after driving for a minute or so. I guess the spring that popped out was part of the seat belt sensor, which failed. Ive owned many vehicles in my years and never had a seat buckle fail like this before. I am going to call my local dealer to see if its possible it could be covered under warranty. Probably not, like you stated.

Did you end up replacing the buckle yourself? If so, how long did it take and did you have to remove the seat from the vehicle?

Most people just buy a whole new assembly. I had to remove the seat to get enough room to bolt up and plug new buckle into wiring harness. Did it on the side of the road, in the dark, in about 15min.

If you think it's serious enough you can make a complaint on the NHTSA. It's easy.
    https://www.nhtsa.gov/
The shift interlock on our HHR failed and it cost me about $630. The service writer told me to keep my receipt as it may turn into a recall as other cars GM sold with the same shifter were on recall for it. It's that there weren't enough failures on the HHR to add it to the list.
In the meantime, I filed a complaint with the NHTS. About a year later the HHR was added and I was refunded $630 from GM.

I ended up ordering the part to replace myself, dealer said my truck is out of warranty for this repair. Is there anything special that you had to do regarding the air bag or electrical system (before or after install)?

the don't cover that? i remember buying an older Honda and the belt was all frayed up with a cut in the strap. and the service writer came out and said, they were going to replace it as it was a safety feature and could be a liability if anything happened.

Just disconnect any plugs from the belt, and install new parts.

I just replaced the passenger side buckle as the SRS light came on and the code said it was the passenger side buckle. Like said before it is around $35 (plus shipping) and you need to give them your VIN to make sure you get the right one. It was an easy installation (except for lifting the seat - quite heavy for me).
The instructions that came with my buckle said to disconnect the neg. battery terminal and wait 90 seconds before disconnecting all the plugs under the seat. I guess that is just in case the SRS sets off an airbag and you definitely do not want that to happen.
