Ni biggie. Go to a shop and have the old one pressed out and a new one pressed in.

Same thing happened to me on my ‘16. 3 of them on the left rear. Had to pound them out the back side. I’m not sure if it’s the same process on the front. Toyota wheel studs are very weak, watch the torque specs!

Using an impact like I always have on all of my other vehicles, just run it till it stops and always been good! Guess I need to invest in a torque wrench....

Thanks, doesn't sound like a big deal, I was cussing and throwing lug nuts lol

Is it safe to drive with one of the lugs missing?

Yeah our lug nut torque is pretty low, I believe it's only 83 ft lbs.

The other ones may be stretched and weakened now. On mine they broke one at a time. First one broke, take wheel off, replace stud. Put wheel back on, second stud breaks, pull off again and replace stud. Put wheel back on, third stud breaks. I wouldn’t drive it and buy a few extras just in case!

As weak as mine felt when the second and third ones broke, I wouldn’t trust it. At least back them off and look to see if the threads are stretched and the coating between isn’t cracking. If all the other studs look good and torque down good, then drive to get your sixth stud on the remaining five.

I didn’t replace all of mine but I always kept a few extra in the truck after that.

You are fine to drive it with 5 out of 6 lugs until you have the time to get it fixed.

I just replaced 4 stripped studs (2 on the front and 2 on the back) on my Wife’s Subbie.

Even highway speed , it will be fine for 1 missing lug.

    P.S.
Never gonna let my wife go to ETD in Wayne NJ for “Free Tire Rotation” again.

FYI, torque spec on the Tacoma lugs is 83 Ft-Lb. You might have got one of the off-spec lead studs that sheared- off easily. It happens.

Good to know. But I have a feeling it was a heavy finger on the trigger of the impact lol :frusty:

Your big problem that caused this problem was using the impact to tighten the lug nuts

I never use an impact wrench to install lugs. Hand tight and then torque wrench to factory spec !!!

I keep telling my son (ASE ceritified mechanic) the same thing and he keeps killing studs on customer repairs !!!

I worked at a tire shop in high school doing easy stuff like plugs, tire changes, and balancing and that's where I learned to use an impact. Hand tighten then a few hits with the impact and send the customer on their way.

I always knew in the back of my head I should use a torque wrench but never had an issue till tonight....live and learn I guess..

Risk versus Reward !!! It is fine until there is a busted stud/lug laying on the ground.

I broke a lug bolt on my 1988 VW and had to buy a Metric tap to fix that disaster when I gunned it on. That was the last time I used an impact wrench to install lugs.

If you learn from your own mistakes, then I am a genius !!!
