I broke my front cv axle for the first time out wheeling. Shatter the outer casing and broke the shaft right at the splines. Is it worth the money for the rcv? Ended up having to take my front diff out and open it up to remove the broken shaft.

Damn, you really did a number on that thing. What happened/what situation was the truck in?

I cant comment on the RCV axles, but I've done a bunch of moderate wheeling on the NAPA axles and they've held up so far.

With rcv axles you will just break your diff instead.

I'm running 37s on 3 inch of lift rear is solid I got dana 60. Regeared to 4.88 locked up rear using a Trac for the front. Front end was over a log but sitting on my skid plate towards the front. Rear tires couldn't get over a log without a little but. So when I bumped it trying to get the rear end over a long front end dip down and caught traction and broke two places

This right here. The law of diminishing returns impacts these trucks as well. I say replace with an OEM axle, and keep a couple spares on the truck when you go wheeling. I have NEVER seen one broken in this manner. Everyone I have seen is always only broken on the shaft. It is much easier/cheaper to swap an axle than it is to have a destroyed diff.

Those cheap lifetime parts store axles have way less ability to articulate than OEM axles. I have OEM on the driver's side and parts store CV on the passenger side, when jacked up the drivers side droops 2" lower than the pass side because the cheap CV axle on that side binds up faster.

On a lifted application while wheeling, that binding will lead to breaking.

Stick with OEM axles or rebuilt OEM ones (CVJ sells them)

I have the same limited droop noted above with a NAPA axle. It's my spare when the boot tore and I have the OEM sitting on the bench to reboot and re-install once I find the time. I'd love to hear the story behind the break. Were you locked up front? Bound up? Flying through whoops? crawling?

I carry a spare and can swap a CV away from home. The diff is another story.

Do you recall which manufacturer made your NAPA axle (or at least the name on the box)? I've noticed that they use different manufacturers for the same NAPA PN.

They do indeed, I get them for my 1st gen from Toyota dealerships. They just don't really advertise them, gotta find the part number and look it up. I know a saw a thread on the 2nd gen for OEM rebuilt axles on here somewhere

they just discontinued them for 1st gens though which blows :( CVJ still rebuilds and sells them though for every gen, pretty much the same price too.

My buddy looked into getting a set of Toyota remans for 2nd gens. Sounds like even those are in very low supply.

Hmm...they may be discontinuing reman OEM CVs all together then, that sucks. They are/were a great deal compared to new OEM

I’m not the guy you asked.
But here is the one I have still sitting in the box. I reused my OE axle. I bought this one “just in case” when doing my bushing.

This is the HD version, with premium boots.
