Someone is selling a camper shell for extra cab Tacoma for $50. The reason it’s so cheap is because the back window is broken and the lock doesn’t work. It’s a Leer. And there are some holes in it and the paint has seen better days. Is is worth buying? Should I wait to find one that isn’t broken. I don’t plan on using a camper shell all the time, just rarely when I go to the mountains. Any suggestions? Thanks

How hard is it to replace the back window on one of those things?

I’d go for it. The worst thing that happens is you lose out on $50. :)

That doesn't look anywhere near as bad as I thought it would! Plexiglass in rear window? I say buy it!

Not worth it unless you're cool with duct tape patches and no rear window. You can find good condition, intact ones for $200 all day long.

locks can easily be replaced check Amazon.

as for the rear window, frame if damaged may or may not be easily replaced. My advice, grab the serial number off the plate inside the cap, call your local cap dealer. They can check and see if a replacement frame is available (if needed). If it does have frame damage and it cannot be replaced, your screwed. This is why sometimes you see caps on CL or FBMP for super cheap that has a broken window.

If its just glass, what others said - plexi or whatever else is readily available.

Can also try this site - they recently changed their site around so might have to call them. They used to have a identification guide which helped to determine the correct part based on rear door call number.

I’d say go for it, even if the frame was damaged I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t remove it and straighten it out.

Sounds dumb but look for holes on the top of the camper. If you are planning to store anything that isn't water-resistant in the bed.

Hey guys quick update! Im SUPER STOKED! I didn’t buy the camper in this thread and took your advice and waited to see if something not broken would come up. And score I did. OfferUp last night some guy posted a black camper shell for an ext. cab tacoma. I messsged him within 20 min of his post and picked it up today! It has new window struts, lock and keys, and sliding windows on the side. It’s also aluminum with carpet interior! super light weight. $60!!! Appreciate all the feedback guys! 44DC66D6-51F7-4940-81B4-DB4CD766ABC9.jpg27893535-F6CE-48A8-8C3D-A9CC2888EEC1.jpg

My Leer dealer (Admiral Camper Shells, Albuquerque NM) is great with repairs and parts. You should get to know your Leer dealer; hope they are as helpful as the one in Albuquerque.
Just today he replaced for me a Windoor screen ($15), and a Windoor strut ($12). He has helped me with repair and parts for non-Leer shells, also.
    Good Luck with that shell!

Small c-clamps from home depot work just fine as well. No need to go to a specific truck cap dealer if inconvenient

IMG-1386.jpg In a pinch, you can use 4 visegrips to hold the shell on. I just bought my camper shell on Friday and made the guy help me put it on properly to take it home. He wanted to charge me extra for the clamps, but I only brought enough money to pay for the shell in case he wanted to pull a fast one. :D

I know the feeling when you get a deal like that you dont stop anywhere to buy clamps or anything you just hurry over and get it before someone else does .
