Went to do an oil change this morning and snapped the head of one of the bolts off

what’s the best way to remove the threaded end still attached to the car

tried some pliers couldn’t get a good grip. Should I drill it out?

    thanks

If it were me, I'd drill it out

Drill it and use a extractor.
    These are very good quality.

Soak it down good with some penetrating oil after you drill it out. Maybe a little heating too, don't want to break the extractor off in bolt, that would be really miserable.Been down that road, ugh! Coat the threads on the new bolts with some good anti-seize, should help next time you have to remove it. Good luck, I hope you get it out with a minimum of trouble.

Did you try a good set of vise-grips, or just regular pliers?

I’d hit it with pb-blaster or whichever penetrant you have, see if the vise grips will work, if not then remove them and try a torch and the vise grips again.
For me the drill and extractor is the last resort....an you'll want to get close to center as possible.

I sprayed some wd40 on it and I think it made it slippery for the pliers and vise grip

I’ll try again later with the vise grip

YES...I helped a friend, he broke 2 off. Drilled it using slightly smaller drill bit then the actual hole. The small pieces left inside came out with the help of a screw driver and threads were still good. Got new bolts at home depot
Add a little grease when you put you back on.

If it's like mine, the skid plate bolts to some pieces of metal that are easily removable with three large bolts. You could take that off and then have better access to work on it. It would be easy to weld a new nut on if you need to.

I don't know man, the cost of that bracket from Toyota might shock you! I'm sure someone will chime in soon with a number.

wd40 isn't the best penetrating oil, pb blaster, liquid wrench, kroil do a better job....since it's off try soaking the whole thing in whatever you have for a day or so and you can try the vise grips again.......locked on well and tap them to mimic an impact effect, leaning into it is the way thing break.

Try a torch to heat up the area where it's threaded into and then the vise grips........use gloves and safety glasses!

That plate is a splash guard, not a skid plate.

Ohh shit I just assumed(stupid I know) that it was broken flush, you got at least 1/2 inch sticking out. Get yourself some pb blaster or equvilant and set of vice grips like these and you should be able to get that out no problem. Best ones I've used are Mac tools but I'm fairly certain that Irwin makes them for Mac, im sure knipex ones are also great. Clamp onto the bolt as tight as possible, turn it back and forth to break it loose.

File a flat surface on each side if it, that's if you have a file. then chanelocks on the flat surface and make sure you are turning it the correct way.

Get you a set of these. Drill a small pilot hole then line the drill bit up and drill away. The bottom part is a tap so it'll drill and tap all in one go and its super sharp so it'll melt through the bolt. I've done dozens of the stupid skid plate bolts like that.
