Today I had to brake hard to avoid a fawn crossing the asphalt road. The front wheels skidded and left marks on the road for about 20 feet. It didn't feel like any other vehicle I've had with ABS. I then hard braked again a while later and again the tires locked up but I did hear what sounded like the ABS activating also, even though the tires screeched and left skid marks again.

Has anyone else had the chance to lock up the brakes on asphalt, and is this how they are supposed to behave?

Depending on conditions (hot dry etc) ABS can let tires leave marks.
ABS simply take the wheel to lock and then unlock. Repeat that like 100 times a second. A quick test is to take it to a deserted road or lot, get it up to 40 mph, brake hard and see if you can steer while braking. If they are locked up the steering wheel is useless. If ABS, you can control direction with steering wheel.
