When breaking, not very firmly even, my brakes feel like they give a little. Where I expect the pedal to slowly and smoothly slow me to a stop they give a bit around 10mph and it lurches me forward a little. Any ideas? It doesn't happen frequently, maybe once a week, but it scares me a bit when I'm pretty close to traffic in front of me and have to slam down to be sure I stop.

    Thoughts?

Tranny? Axle wrap? Doesn't sound like brakes.

Mine has done that very same thing several times approaching a stop at that speed. It just feels to me like the transmission and engine giving a little surge of power while the transmission is downshifting.

Strangely enough, several people, including myself have reported a surge at low speed when lightly pressing on the accelerator pedal while at the same time steering the vehicle. It’s a bit startling when in a parking lot or driveway, but it seems to happen with some Tacomas.

It was discussed in a thread by a TW member who had worked with his dealer on that trait of his vehicle.

When your are decelerating the computer cuts fuel until you reach somewhere around 1300 RPM. When the fuel comes back on you feel the surge. I think that is what you are experiencing.

I get that too. It feels like at a certain speed the tranny goes into neutral and you lose the engine braking so it surges forward.

I was curious as to what the engine RPMs were when slowing to a stop from 40 mph in my truck.

I checked it out today and saw that engine RPMs with my foot off of the accelerator when approaching a stop are smooth at around 800 to 1000 or 900 to 1100 in D mode. So, normal operation there.

Recently it’s been downshifting smoothly and when looking at the tachometer when slowing to a stop you can see the approximate 200 RPM bumps in increased engine speed as it downshifts through the gears.

At over 2,400 miles, the engine and transmission have been operating smoother with little to no clunking and surging as was happening more often at under 1,000 miles, and with some noticeable improvement after 1,000 miles.

It did a very slight surge several days ago about 1/2 mile away from home when approaching the same stop sign.
