one of the first things I noticed when I got my '17 (trd off road 4x4) was how little pedal travel I have to engage the brakes. It took a bit of getting used to and when I drive another car I have an OH SHIT moment the first time I hit it's brakes and they don't immediately engage

just seeing if this is normal. I had to get some body work done and borrowed my dad's 04 camry and MAN does that thing travel down before engaging but so did my other cars back in the day. it's not a sinking pedal and they can even engage abs it's just a way different feel.

I had to drive one of my folks for a doctors appointment and we drove their 19 sienna and it's brake pedal was a bit more like my tacoma's but it didn't grab as quickly. since these are all toyotas I was a little worried since the older camry had such greater travel, the much newer sienna much less, but my tacoma the least, that either the camry or my tacoma had an issue...but once I get used to the feel they all brake "normal" just different.

I don't have any problem braking so the booster seems to be working fine, the brake lights come on appropriately (little push and ON)...just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

Do those other Toyotas have an electric brake booster, or are they the typical vacuum assist?

Electric boosters are always going to feel different, like most of the electric power steers do.

I don't think tacoma's have electric assist nor my folks sienna...from my cursory google search only tundras have it and it's for towing assist.

So I guess it's nothing to worry about since I haven't noticed difficulty braking...it's just super sensitive
secret time* I like the quick action ;)

ORs and Pros have an electric brake booster. Take a look under the hood. No large vacuum diaphragm. Just a metallic mass with tubes and harnesses. Some Lexus, like the GX have it also. That's how CC / MTS or ATRAC works.

Your 3rd gen Offroad has electric vacuum assist. It is going to feel different over a typical vacuum booster in a 'regular' vehicle. Mine is touchy as well. Especially between it and my 89 Civic, lol.

You make it sound like it’s an electric motor. It’s it a actually an electronically controlled hydraulic pump?
