I'm getting ready to change brakes all the way around on my 04 Tacoma. Is there a video on this forum somewhere that shows how to do the drum brakes? I have searched and searched for one.

Coincidence. I just replaced the rear shoes a few days ago and wrote it up, with photos, part links, tools, etc.

No special tools needed for this job, which is nice.

Step by Step Tacoma Rear Drum Brake Shoe Replacement
    • The only parts you need are the Toyota Rear Brake Shoe Kit (04495-35230) - this kit includes new shoes and new retaining clips for both sides of the vehicle.
    • (optional, I did not use) Drum Brake Hardware Kit - various springs that attach to the brake shoes. This is one place where I think an aftermarket kit is a better option, since you get all the parts in one go. Generally unnecessary unless you live in a rust-prone area.

Mine needs rear brake attention also. I gotta comment though - the parking brake design is one of the worst things on these trucks. Mine has not worked in years (frozen bell crank arms) and the auto adjusters never worked.

I rebuilt my parking brake when I bought the truck about 150,000 miles ago.

It has worked great ever since all year long .

Yes the steel pins in the aluminum alloy Bell Crank brackets do tend to seize when not used for long periods to the point the brackets need cut apart .

Do some Tacoma's not have the automatic adjuster part? Mine doesn't on either side? I'm just curious...

my unsolicited strong advice is replace the springs with new ones. As mentioned above the parking brake / auto adjuster is of poor design. When the springs get weak the auto adjuster will "over adjust" the shoes and one side will drag all the time. Can you get away with it, more than likely yes but who wants to do the job a second time?
