I have a new 16' Offroad edition, reading about tow capacity this and that and I "think" I've got it, "But" I want to make sure.
If I go out and buy a boat, how much weight can the boat and trailer weigh together??? Thanks:confused:

Do you have the factory tow package?
You could potentially tow 6800 lbs
Another number to take into consideration though is total payload. 1620 lbs. This would include anything inside the truck, bed, or tow hitch weight. Also remember that the dry weight on boats does not include anything you'll be adding like gas and gear. I would personally try to stay around 4000 lbs max. That's what I towed with my second gen and it felt like a lot of weight for a Tacoma.

Just as Launch21v said, when looking at boat/trailer weight take in account gas and gear. Is it a fishing boat, if so rods, reels, baits, life jackets, all that adds up real quick. A ski boat you will add weight even faster with tubes, skis, knee boards and such.
1 gallon of gas weighs around 6 pounds, and depending on the boat it could have a 20-30 gal or more tank.
That may not seem like a lot, but that extra 120 to 180 pounds added to 3200 already you will feel it.
Also, total weight will feel different depending on the boat. A bass boat is heavy in the rear, so less tongue weight.
A ski boat has more bulk on the front which will be heavier tongue weight.
A pontoon is just light all around and will probably pull really easily with the tacoma, although pontoon boats do bounce more on rough roads.

Yes, I have a factory hitch, classIV. If I understand you right both the boat and trailer plus outfitting it should be no more than 4K? Should I buy anything else before I tow???
    Hey, thanks for your help!

Just trying to get an idea right now, maybe a fishing boat big enough for 4 adults but I guess small enough my taco can pull it!

I am not trying to sway you one way or another, but I am a boat technician. If you have any questions about particular brands or types of boats I can offer some advice.

You'll have zero problems with a 18-19' bass boat or fish/ski.

I was towing a 21 foot wakeboard boat with my second gen. Gear and gas made it close to 4500 lbs on a tandem axle trailer. What you're looking at will be fine.

Most would say that's a small boat for four adults fishing. My second gen does tow my Skeeter 18' fish/ski just fine. At one point I think I calculated it to be just over 3k total loaded.

You'll need a ball mount and ball (you'll want one that is right for your trailer). If the trailer has electric brakes you will need a brake controller. You might want towing mirrors. Otherwise, the truck is very well setup. On my first gen I had to buy the hitch and add wiring so the 2nd/3rd gen setups seem really slick.

We should mention there is a BIG difference in weight between a 18-19' fiberglass boat and a 18-19' aluminum boat.

I pull a 16.5' fiberglass bass boat in a RC 2.7l. Full of gas and gear it's a bear to pull. Half a fuel tank I seem glide right along. I know it's there, but it isn't bad.

He should be fine with the weight of a 19' glass boat. He's got the V6.

I agree, just saying when he's shopping he can consider an aluminum. They pull better on the road, but drift easily in the water.
