I thought I’d give you a “No Way” moment I am a new 2017 tacoma owner (2 months) and noticed my BSM wasn’t working, decided to go to Toyota dealership & get diagnostics done, well he came back with a code & price to swap out 2 sensors & whatever else is involved & the price is (drum roll) $3,721.52. I Was speechless & decided to just not push the button on. I think there is a easier fix. Any ideas how to correct it myself ?

I’ve had mine quit working a couple times. First time I turned them off for a week and when I turned them on they started working again. Second time I thought they were toast and had them off for a couple months. Turned them on one day and they were working again and have been fine since

    Oh look, another mod....
I've corrected my BSM by using my mirrors and looking over my shoulder when changing lanes or backing up.

Welcome to the forum. First thing is remove the plastic covers and clean the sensors. If that doesn’t work, check the fuse.

I have a 2016. Mine have acted up a couple times, I just reset them several times and clean them. Maybe try pulling your negative off your battery and reset the entire system too.

If the sensors really are bad, that is the cost of parts and labor, including calibration. I bought my truck used from the dealer and they agreed to repair the BSM before delivery. They couldn't repair it so they told me to take it to the nearest Toyota dealer and send them the bill. Two sensors and labor was just over $3k, 18 months ago. The system is not super robust and the 16 and 17 model years has issues with moisture and the rear harness connectors (which is where these sensors tie into). If the light on the BSM button and/or mirrors comes on when you push the button it's probably not a fuse but it's easy to check. The sensors can have problems if they are covered with snow/ice/mud, too.

Thanks for posting. I am in the process of deciding on packages to order for my DCSB OR. I think I will skip this tech altogether and and just get an aftermarket bumper to replace the chrome one that would come with it. I don't have anything against this feature, but I think if it wasn't covered by warranty, and I had this issue, I'd just pass on fixing it.

Pretty much no aftermarket rear bumper will work with those sensors to be honest I wish I would have bought the sr5 anything extra I paid for it seems I've ripped off and replaced with aftermarket

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
Gonna be pretty hard if not impossible to get a TRD OR without BSM. You might have to go SR pkg to get away from it.

Personally, I LOVE it on my new OR. In fact, I was at the dealer this afternoon looking at a new RAV4 we're thinking of buying and that is one of my criteria for the tech pkg. Basically, getting a RAV with the same accouterments as my TRD OR. I also have the Yota Platinum Warranty for 10/125k to deal with these things. Beyond that, I'll be close to dead, if not dead, and if it breaks I'll just roll without!

There is one available now and I think another was supposed to be available soon if not already.

FYI, there is no chrome bumper on tacomas. It's silver colored plastic. I was very disappointed.

I've passed on about three OR tacos coming in that had LED headlights as their only upgrade due to them not being the color that I wanted. They're out there, but you're right. They ARE hard to find.

I don't have anything against it. It's just that, for me, some of these packages don't make sense to spend money on. The Premium Audio & Navigation Package w/Options? Nope! It seems like a bunch of subscription based options and Toyota's native NAV package. I'll stick to Google maps or even Ways before I would use Toyota's navigation. If you want leather, they bundle it up with a bunch of other stuff that you don't want, (moonroofs, premium JBL audio). I figure I can spend that money more wisely on better selected options.

And sort of back on topic, I think if you were thinking about opting for a real steel off road bumper, then for the most part, with some exceptions, the BSM goes out the window as it doesn't work through a real steel bumper. And being a somewhat longer vehicle, even in the SB configuration, I've seen plenty of tacos drag the rear bumper and have it get crushed and fall apart. I can't see that being covered by your warranty. I think I'd be more into it if they could figure out a way to make the system more robust. I haven't seen an aftermarket bumper that is supposed to work with BSM that I really care for yet. Some of the best looking bumpers require cutting the body. That's a hard sell too. Hahaha. Especially if you purchase brand new!

I have a 2020 Tacoma SR5 access cab 6 foot bed access cab. I love it and I don't want to trade it. I have problems completely turning my head to look although I do my best. I have stick on blind spot mirrors that help. I would like to add blind spot monitoring to my truck . I have noticed that there is a lot of experience on this thread. I have heard that you cannot put a blind spot monitor on a truck with a steel bumper. I thought my bumper was metal, come to find out its plastic and looks like chrome. Assuming that blind spot monitoring would work with this bumper. Does anyone have experience with a third party system. Lots of things have come on the market in the last couple years. I am sure some of them are crap. I don't need the bind spot indicating mirror, the audible sound and the blinking LED light would be plenty for me. I am not an off roader.
I am reposting the pix put up by Captqc. I know the BSM sensor is the square black box. What is the round black circular looking sensor about the size of a nickel. It is being held up by the tie wrap? Any hep appreciated. bumper removed.jpg

    An unhealthy amount...

That would be one of the rear parking sensors.

Check out post #22 for write-up on taking apart the rear bumper. Post #5 has an exploded view of parts.
