While driving on the hwy, I received a BSM warning light, so I just turned them off until I got home. After reading thru the owner's manual, it said you should clean off the sensors, which I did. The warning light is still coming on........any suggestions???

The switch is off and the warning light is still on? Is it on permanently or only when somebody is in your blind spot? What is wrong with having your blind spot being monitored, and a little light flashing occasionally?

I turned the BSM off because it did not operate and the warning light stayed on. The warning light goes off once the BSM is switched off, but it is my wife's truck, and I want her to have the BSM working properly. Sorry if I did not make that clear in my original post.

Could be a broken wire, bad sensor, bad connector, etc.

Did you spray backside of rear bumper really well? Especially corner, pressure washer, self wash car war wash.

Make sure you clean the right sensors. Lots of people confuse the little dot parking sensors for the BSM ones. The BSM sensors are inside/behind the plastic bumper corners and are a bit bigger than a deck of cards. The dot sensors are only for parking.

Do you have to remove the caps to get to clean them? If so what is the best way to get the caps off?

I would suggest having the dealership take care of it if it's under warranty so you don't have to deal with it. Something always seems to break when taking tabs out. At least for me. Found this thread. Hope it helps.

No, just flush with hose or power washer. Either reach under bumper or between bumper and bedside. Here in north, snow and road dirt get packed up in bumper. Blast is and they are working again.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I am going to clean the "correct" sensors this time and hopefully that works.

What error message are you getting on the dash? Or what warning light ?

It shows the yellow triangle with a message on the dash saying the BSM is being shut off due to an error or something along those lines. Tomorrow I'll be able to spray the sensors off and see if that solves the problem. If not, then I'll have to take off the bumper caps and check everything out.

If there's an error being reported, it will probably require Techstream to clear, assuming whatever caused the issue to begin with is resolved. Mine had the same issue after the sensors became packed with snow driving across I-80 in Wyoming during a blizzard. A few weeks later, after running the truck thru the car wash, I pulled the caps and cleaned the sensors, unplugged, replugged everything and the issue was still present. A regular code scanner didn't find any codes, but once I connected Techstream to it, I found some codes and cleared them. Took about 10 miles of driving afterward for the system to go back to normal.

My guess is there was no need to clean anything and all that needed to be done once the snow melted was clear out the errors using Techstream.

You may need to check that the connector is fully seated. I've ran into a couple toyotas where the rubber grommet inside the connector hardened a bit and caused intermittent connection throwing a code/ error light. I would start there. If you've been hit and had the car in a bodyshop the bsm could be out of alignment. Calibration can be performed and even pass within spec but throw a code later for misalignment on the vertical axis.

Definitely start by checking the plug is fully seated then clean the sensor but be gentle. The brackets aren't super strong and you don't want to disturb the angle. If that doesn't resolve your issue then you may need to have someone with techstream or aftermarket jbox diag tool hookup and find out what fault codes are present to farther diagnose the issue

You have to remove the bumper covers to access the sensors. The visible sensors are your parking sonars that won't have any affect on the bsm

Who knew they could get so dirty. I just changed by bumper out and during disassembly of the oem I discovered the bsm sensor was caked in west Texas dirt. White dust was from a trip to big bend and must have been stuck up there for 3-4 months and multiple car washes. Wild stuff, surprised I didn’t get an error.
