i have a 2015 Tacoma that has squishy brakes. It's not the brake booster because the brakes are firm when the truck is off and then get soft when the truck starts. Took it to brakes plus and said I had a bad master cylinder. I replaced the mc myself and bled the brakes 5x. I still have squishy brakes and I can hear an air sound coming from the ABS module located on the passengers side under the hood when it press on the brakes. Somebody said I need to bleed the abs module using a scanner. Does that sound right? How much is a repair like this? Has anyone experienced this same thing happening?

I told you 2 days ago this is what needs to be done. Take it to a dealer or a shop with a good scanner and have them bleed it. A good scanner costs about 5000 bucks. As long as they charge less than that your already ahead

In this situation, what does the scanner do exactly?

The scanner is used to bleed the abs module. No other way to do it.

Since your reservoir is higher, could you just bleed to the bottom of the reservoir and refill/repeat?

Yes. It's really Trippy how it works. All you do is follow the on screen instructions. It pretty much pressurizes the pump and activates it to purge air.

Adjusting the rear brakes makes a huge difference as well. I don't see air in many 2012+ tacoma/4runner/FJ electric boosters.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that...
Going to revive this old thread to ask/add to it.

Does a 2006 TRD Sport's ABS need to be bled via Techstream/Good OBD II scanner? Does it have that functionality? I am doing some brake work next weekend and will be adding fresh fluid.

If I remember correctly the abs is it’s own system and can’t be troubleshoot through an OBD scanner.

Yeah, it seems that's the case on my year model truck. I have seen Techstream used to bleed abs on other, newer, model Toyota's.

The scanner is used to cycle the valves in the ABS Unit in a timed manner. Some people have tried doing this using a jumper and if they leave the solenoiod energized too long it burns out the coil. Then you have a problem. ABS Units are not cheap.

I love how people try to be cheap and it just ends up costing more money. I don’t see how some people think a jumper wire ( mostly a cheap old piece of speakerwire) is better than using a proper scanner.

I guess they use the old adage that the ability to make good decisions is learned from making really bad decisions.

    LOL

I seriously doubt people that use a jumper wire instead of the scanner think the jumper wire is better, I think they're just trying to save some money which apparently you love it when people fail at saving money.

I don’t have and answer to your specific question, but if they’re working correctly now they will be working correctly after your brake work as long as you keep the reservior topped off. It’s only if air gets into the abs module that it would need to be bled. Apologies if you already knew this.
