Now that some of us have some miles on our trucks, how do the wheels wear and scratch? I have always liked dark or black wheels, but when they scratch, it is very obvious. Are the pro wheels the same? Do they scratch easily?

One thing I do like about the sport and off-road wheels is the machines face. One of my wheels has a little scratch from a rock and I forget it’s there because you can’t see it unless you are right on it.

Toyota is having a sale on black pro wheels at the moment at the dealership I go to, so I wanted to jump on them if I could, but I don’t want to have to replace/repaint the wheels every couple years because they look bad. I put 20,000+ miles on the truck a year, so I have no doubt that they will get chipped, and probably quickly

I have the gloss pro wheels. I haven't had mine chip or scratch yet. I keep a coat of chemical guys ez creme and a coat of wax on them often. It helps repel dust. (see picture below).

Matte black is probably going to hold up better, but matte does get a dirty look to them later in their life if that bothers you.

The benefit to black wheels is that you can take black paint that doesn't even match very well and touch them up without being able to tell. I've taken a black sharpie to my black wheels in the past and you couldn't tell. Good luck with what you decide.

dont take em on the trails if you dont want scratches. wheel scratching is a part of offroading.

Thank you!! I agree with looking dirty later in life. That doesn’t bug me so much to be honest as long as it’s even. It is a truck after all, the interior already has scratches from my kiddo and I expect there will be more.

    I appreciate the pics

I have a 4x2. She won’t be seeing any trails unless completely necessary. Just wanted a functional daily. The truck bed was used the first week I owned it and I have never owned a truck before! Ha! I probably will never not own one again. Way too versatile

Edit: updated first post with pic

I swapped my stock gloss black tacoma trd pro wheels out for the matte black 4runner pro wheels. I did ceramic coat them, but without that I wouldnt want them. They hold onto dirt and brake dust bad. With the cquartz, that stuff just rolls off when I spray them down.

I have them. I have about 14k miles on them with no offroading and they look new still. I have no issue with dirt or brake dust clinging to them. I just spray them with a wheel cleaner and clean them with a brush when I wash my truck. Twice a year I pull them all off, clean them thoroughly front and back, and put this product on them:

Yes I did. Without that, the wheels literally are impossible to get looking right after they get nasty.

That's cool. I didn't know you could ceramic coat matte. I bet that's the key. My last wheels were matte. A few years in, they had a brown grey look that you could never correct. I saw a matte black BMW yesterday that was probably 4-5 years old. It looked awful. I bet it was cool new, but once they develop imperfections, they are there for good.

You're exactly right. After only a couple of washes, these wheels had a funky grayish blueish hue to them and looked super flat instead of matte. I did a decontamination cleaning on them and coated them with just some cheap cquartz dlux. It made them look super black and rich and didn't really add any shine. I think matte stuff is even more necessary to put ceramic on. I'm gonna use cquartz finest reserve next time.

Side note, that is not a great price. Wait until eBay has a 25% off sale then buy them that way. I got a set for ~$625 shipped.

I believe you can also use gun bluing acid on aluminum for deep into the metal scratches and gouges. just look at some of the Youtube videos on what it does for shotgus with parkerized finish.

The only thing I put on mine is that Dr. Beasleys Matte Final Finish and I have no problem keeping them clean. I don't believe that is a ceramic coat. It is a spray on, wipe off finish. It does make the wheels a bit more "slick" I think so maybe that is why things don't stick to them.

$200 each for an OEM 7" wide wheel is a bargain?

The width of the wheel shouldn't factor into what you consider a bargain. $200 for an OEM wheel is a good price when compared to other options.

I often see people after the skateboard look, then a few years goes by and they wonder why they are wearing out parts prematurely.
