It isn't magnetic and does sorta crumble when rubbing between fingers but not crumble into dust just smaller pieces

Might be worth sending a sample into Blackstone if you can’t figure out what it is.

What kind of oil filter? Toyota OEM or some other brand/model? Maybe cut open the old filter and see if it offers up some answers?

Depends on how much they’ll take. I already gave most of my oil back to autozone

Second hand. Had about 126,000 miles when I bought it had and had an oil change at 125,500 miles in October of last year. I have 130,158 miles on it now, this is my second oil change but my first filter change (kinda stupid I know). It was sitting quite awhile though the guy barely drove it it had been about ten months between the oil change he did and my first oil change.

    Commonly called sludge.

I like to dump & refill the oil. Drive it a week or two. Then oil change with a new filter. Both times, drain very thoroughly.

When you put a fram oil filter on, tell yourself you just put on a oil filter bypass. Don’t feel bad, I’ve done the same until I learned how horrible they are. Most use the oem filter from Toyota, the tall one, not the shorter one.

Looks like pieces of the filtering material from the inside of the crappy oil filter. As already stated change oil and filter x2

It could be oil sludge particles. An easy check would be to remove a valve cover and look to see if there is a buildup of sludge. Or get a boroscope and snake it into the oil fill spout and have a look around.

    You do not want sludge.

I'm leaning towards sludge. I'd do oil and filter charges at much shorter intervals until you no longer have those contaminants in the drained oil. Like a week, then change the oil and filter. Then do it again a week after that. If the oil keeps coming out with that stuff, keep changing it until it doesn't.

If it is sludge working it's way loose, it'll eventually clog up the oil filter, and dirty the oil pretty quickly..

Oil is cheap. Engines not so much.

    But, that's just my thoughts.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I say it's lack of oil changes from prior owners and looks like sludge. Sludge is never a good sign, not even in toilets after a fast food meal.

If the particle crumbles into smaller pieces, then it is likely from the filter. Sludge will smear like grease.

Suggest to use another brand filter. Consider WIX, NAPA Gold, Bosch or ACDelco for filter brands.

Build the habit of changing filter with each oil change.

Something we see often inside automatic transmission pans are small pieces of metal clad seals . Metal clad seals seal rotating shafts . Through the years of hot and cold cycles , The nitrile on the metal clad seals gets brittle and can break off and accumulate in the pan . The same can be said for small chunks of gasket . Its why its soo important to replenish the additives in the oil .
Agree with the guys here . Lack of oil changes can contest to this

From what you said, it sounds like the particles weren't there the FIRST time you changed the oil (or at least you didn't notice any) and this is the first time you've drained oil that YOU put in - first drain is previous owner's oil, then refill your oil, now first time you're draining you put in yourself?

If so, I'd go with others who say sludge of some kind. Like either the prev owner used subpar dyno oil (or hardly changed oil). Now, you put in good oil (synth?), which is cleaning out the sludge, which synthetics do when first switching over a lot of times.

Whether it's good or bad would depend on how much sludge is in there, which you can tell by doing what JimmyH says. I've seen "sludge" that were 'hard-packed' enough to be more akin to "particles" than hard grease.

You do realize Fram filters are the #1 selling filters in the world? If they were as bad as people perceive them to be they would have been out of business decades ago. Now I have only been using them for 50+ years so who am I to say. I seldom get rid of a vehicle with less than 300K. Don't blame the filter blame the owner that remembers to change the oil once every 4 years.

Probably just crud buildup or sludge coming out. Change the oil again after 1000 miles or so and see what it looks like.

Personally, change the oil and filter every 1k miles until it looks normal then back off to every 3k miles. Avoid using any oil additive engine cleaner such as seafoam or similar, stick with frequent oil changes.

You can also put some sea foam in the oil shortly before you change it.
