Does anyone know how the Bilstein 5100 shocks for a Tundra work on a Tacoma? is it too stiff or unnoticeable?

If I recall correctly, member 4WD (Old Man Doug) actually had some, but I don't know from what year Tundra. Are these the ones with 5 settings?

yeah 5 settings for a tundra, 3 for a tacoma.

the reason i ask is that i recently bought a toytec lift with an eibach coil and they were out of tacoma 5100 and told me that tundra 5100s were the exact same except the mount at the bottom of the shock was bigger. come to find out as i had expected that of course the tundra shock is made stiffer than the tacoma 5100 shock.

Does anyone have experience with them in action. Am I going to to notice the difference if I use the tundra ones? Or should I get that tacoma ones for best ride?

    Thanks.

I still run the 1st gen tundra 5100's , they're valved slightly stiffer than the tacomas IIRC but the difference is barely noticable, gives a firm but great ride IMO..

Actually, the ToyTec/Eibach springs would be a better match seeing how the Bilsteins are valved to their spring , just as the OME 882's etc; are matched for their specific shock

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I'd go with the taco springs. Instant 3" and you leave the shock at the stock setting. They're 30# lighter so that will help with the extra stiffness in the tundy 5100

10/4 that makes a lot of sense! You have no idea how much research I've put into this lift. I want to make sure I do it right te first time. I think I just found the winning combo.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but was curious what the point of running the tundra 5100s over taco ones would be? Does it offer more travel? If more travel, is this with running the eibach 3in lift coils?

I saw that one member was running tundra 5100s with Tacoma adjustable coilovers setup and got 11in of travel.

I believe that I'm still the only one on entire site thats using 1st gen. Tundra 5100's, except now running 2nd gen OME 883#'s & those gave me 3" lift on bottom setting of 5100's...

No one has gotten 11" of travel from either Tundra or Tacoma 5100 pretty sure about that one...

Do the tundra 5100s offer more travel is that why you are running them? I saw this on lumpski's build. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-lumpskie-build-96-5-speed.278223/page-2#post-6910493 a little different that what you are running.

Hmmm, actually I'm not sure exactly what he's running or how he MODDED to get what he's got, but I'd have to check those numbers myself in regards to amount of travel... As for the 5100's, aside from having 5 settings as opposed to 3 & slightly different valving, they are the same shock physically speaking...

How I came about getting these is almost the same as the other guy , they (Bilstien) didn't have a specific app for 1st gen tacomas but noted that 1st gen Tundras front susp. was virtually identical to 1st gen tacomas so the local Bilstein dist. told me that some guys had been using these with good results seeing how the standard 3-setting billys were almost always back ordered because of demand, so I took a chance & bought them & have had no complaints since installing them...

Main reason people like to use the Tundra 5100 is the 5 perches so extra adjustment if needed. Also some people believe that since the tundra has a larger lower mounting point it is more stout. I ran them with Tundra TRD springs and they were fine. I didn't notice anything special or wrong with running them.

I see. Thanks for the info. I currently have the 5100s for the tacos, but was just curios why some ran tundra ones.

Yeah, I'd agree with that, you get the same amount of lift as the 3 groove but it IS nice to split the incrementals to fine tune the ride so to speak..
