Yup. For me, 45mph is the best speed for MPGs. I've seen over 30mpg on a long run at those speeds. I average just shy of 20mph for the life of the Taco with some MPG damaging mods.

55 mph is max efficiency. You can get 24-26 mpg if you can go that slow.

It's not your speed getting you honks. No idea how many times I've crossed the country at 60mph, but I've had no better or worse luck in an unladen car doing 85, and definitely don't get honked at. I bet you can do 160mph and someone will try to ride your bumper though

Exactly my experience after 40k on my 2020. The V6 works hard at speeds over 65 mph. I’m sure there are several reasons. Rotational mass and aerodynamics to name a couple.

The only way to get good mpg's on the highway is drive like an old lady and never hit an incline. I swear most of these people who claim good highway milage think any road with a speed limit of 50+ mph and no traffic lights is a highway.

I'm doing daily 170 mile round trips to work and I'm getting 20mpg . Stock gears, 315/75/16 for tires, winch, winch bumper , whopping 5400+lbs. The sweet spot is 60mph . I'm rolling 6th gear auto at 1450ish rpms . My commute isn't flat either . Running current kdmax tune and rolling premium fuel .

I drive 65mph on the highway and get 28mpg consistently. My best was 31mpg on a 1 hour drive.

Was seeing 19ish on stock wheels at 65-75 on the highway.
Lift and 33’s I’m seeing the same as you. More on city, than on highway(bout 15 highway now). I just got a calibrator from RC today, so I will update you if that’s one of the culprits. Do you have a lift?

Op mentioned gear hunting, so must have an auto. Are you tuned?
My truck with kdmax something something refuses to kick into 6th until I’m doing over 70 and then my rpms sit just under 2k. I’ve got a hog of an ARB up front, sliders, a 2” lift and 33’s.
When I can keep the truck in sixth, I get my best mpgs and that means doing better than 70 the whole time. Around 17-19 miles per gallon.
Just thought I’d share my abnormal experience

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
i wish other people would also understand this…

I cannot stand adaptive cruise for this reason and the sudden slowing. So annoying.

I typically drive 80-85 on the interstate, my average hovers around 17 on interstate drives. Fully stock at the moment.

Around town I have a lead foot as well and see numbers around 16.

I almost always turn ECT on, and often times am in the S settings and modulate gears as needed to slow down quicker, but typically let the truck up shift as it wants rolling around in S6.

If i only drove around town i'd be lucky to get 18 mpg, probably closer to 17. I can get 23, and change all day at 70 mph on the highway.

All gasoline burning vehicles get better mileage driving in the city than on the highway.

Sitting in unmoving traffic or long waits at traffic lights isn't driving. So mileage depends on which city you are driving

Start paying attention to your highway(s) route as to whether or not you have any elevation gains or inclines, that can make a difference in MPGs. The freeway i drive daily here has an elevation gain going north so MPG can vary for me by 5-6 mpg vs. going southbound @ 65mph depending on the distance i'm driving.

Idk what cities you drive in, but all the ones here have lots of traffic lights, and stop signs.

That's the point, if you drive at city speeds with no impediments the mileage will be better than driving at highways speeds. The OP was bewildered that he was getting better mileage driving "in the city" than on the highway. If you aren't being stuck in traffic or sitting at lights...you'll get great mileage. Driving in smallville isn't the same as driving in LA traffic.

I'm not amazed anymore when what I think is obvious is not understood even when explained. I actually heard a friend's wife berate him after she complained about how often she needed to refill her SUV. He told her that her lead foot was the issue...and her response was "if it gets 15 MPG it doesn't matter how fast you go, it's the number of miles travelled"

Which validates the arguement: If the average American is an idiot, 50% of the population is even dumber

I've been in many, many, many cities in my day, and never saw one that got me better fuel economy than being on the highway. Is this something new?
