Long trip to the keys this past week and on the way down my power chewer managed to do this in about 20 seconds flat. She jumped over the barrier to the front seat which set off the seatbelt alarm while I was driving. I reached over and attached the seatbelt and she helped herself shortly thereafter.

I'll call the dealer Monday to price the whole assembly but curious if there is a better way that won't cost me almost $300?

Often dealer will do for free if you get another service. They are pretty liberal around here on the safety of belts.

used belt and retractors run about $150 on line. I've never changed one, but I've had my B Pillar off often and looking at it, seems simple. There are some vids on YouTube that might be helpful

Interesting. I'll call the dealer I bought it from on Monday and see what they're thoughts are. We're looking to trade up on my wife's Camry soon as well so maybe they'll be a little "forgiving" :)

Yeah, the act of replacing it should be relatively simple but for a seat belt I'm thinking new may be preferred but if the dealer quotes me some ridiculous price then I may consider it.

Unfortunately we're rather lacking on junk yards anywhere near me. The only one near me that sells parts to the public doesn't show anything newer than a 1st gen in their yard.

ask your local dealer and see if they have any. Since its a safety issue they'll probably get it replaced as quick as possible so they aren't held liable if you happen to drive your truck off a cliff or into the ocean and the seatbelt doesnt work as intended.

That’s very reasonable. I wouldn’t go near a used seatbelt for a $182 part. It’s too much risk for that price personally.

Same with a salvage yard. You don't know the history of the seat belt. It may have saved a life already.

Are seatbelts a one and done thing? They're not elastic. I would imagine that as long as it's not physically damaged or sun-faded it would last just about forever since it's basically just a nylon web. Not much can go wrong with them aside from mechanical cuts.

By that logic, use a snatch strap once and into the trash can it goes.

The nylon will stretch in an accident. Some of the fibres could be compromised. Although, visible damage may not be evident.

Stretched fibers would weaken the belt.

Don't screw around with it. REPLACE it with OEM parts from Toyota.

She had one. She left it in the back seat when she decided to jump the netting and come up front. Guess I should have multiple in the car LOL

Just an off the cuff thought.

If your trading the wife's Camry, maybe part of the deal could be a new seatbelt for the Tacoma installed........

I don't know the guidelines around passenger vehicles, but in heavy equipment the seatbelt is a service item, to be replaced five years after date of install. My example is of course OEM-specific, but I found it interesting.
