I just put on an All Pro APEX bumper and have way too much frame exposed. It's an 06 so I have a normal amount of surface rust of the frame and suspension parts but it really stands out since the bumper is new and all my front suspension is exposed. I'm looking for a good way to prep and protect all the exposed areas and make it look good. I also want to do the whole frame. Thanks in advance.

Are you aware of the frame rust recall? Have you taken the truck in for an inspection at the Toyota dealership?

Damn, Ill never complain about driving 20 minutes across town for dealer service again...

Pep Boys sells a rattle can of undercoating. Its a very thick, tarry goo much like Ziebart coatings. Ive used it with great success in the past. Problem is.....do you have a Pep Boys near you? Im sure any auto store by you must sell the rattle can undercoatings though.

Whats the best way to prep the surface? I have a pressure washer but that won't be enough to take the surface rust off. Anyone know what conditions must apply for a frame rust recall? They use sodium chloride on the roads and in pretty sure I'd meet the recall but what do they do? Frame off sandblast and undercoat? And they would probably skip over all my aftermarket shit and just do the frame if they did anything.

High Quality Clear Coat... After cleaning and wiping down all parts of the frame and undercarriage with alcohol, acetone. Spray all areas that can be effected by rust. It also won't look like a "hack" job when you are done. If the clear coat does fail it will be easy to tell if it is starting to rust underneath the paint, unlike must "undercoating sprays". I have like the PPG clear coats for this, but thats just ones own personal preference.

I can't tell you what's best but this is what I'm doing. I'll be coating as much of the frame as possible this month with POR-15. I've got sliders coming this week that will be coated as well. I'm not sure how it will look, but I rarely ever wash my truck and I'm more concerned with protection than looks.

The best and the cheapest once a frame has been exposed to the elements is very easy to treat....but, you must do it yearly. Take a foam brush and "paint" the surface to be protected with wheel bearing grease. (Red grease) Do this once a year. There is no such thing as rust prevention that works for the life of a truck with one application. It too should be re coated regularly.....why not just use red wheel bearing grease ? Grease cuts the O2 from the metal preventing it from rusting.

I live in the salt belt and my ten year old trucks have had no rust, not even "surface rust" in areas I chose to paint. Do nuts and bolt heads too.

I've heard of doing the same thing with WD40 and a garden sprayer.

While there is merit to your point, it sounds like a REALLY messy way to prevent rust.

But...I bought a 82 Camaro from a salvage yard in 2007. There wasnt a SPOT of rust on the underside of the car. I mean NOWHERE. Thats IMPOSSIBLE for a car here in Syracuse. Then I found out the car had several bad oil leaks and was basically covering the ENTIRE underside of the car in a fine mist of oil. It was a greasy mess to work on that car. I used to come out from under it looking like a coal miner. So the oil coating trick must work......but Im thinking spray on undercoating must be a whole lot cleaner in the long run.

My 06 has a brand new frame and I would like to protect it for as long as possible. Has anyone tried Rock Guard?

I agree with a rust encapsulator like POR15, applied after you grind/wire wheel the rust off.

MonstaLiner makes a similar product (www.monstaliner.com) that you can leave 'natural' or you could apply their bedliner product over it if you wanted a different look in the areas that are visually exposed as you mention.

Not at all. You choose areas to coat. You aren't just misting the whole under carriage. That is messy. Grease on the outside, oil on the inside of frame and body parts. Bio degradable oil.
