    Hello All,

What is the best way to protect the underside of my Tacoma, mainly thinking the exhaust. It just looks like that where it is at factory, that there could be problems if I am taking it off roading. New vehicle so I am looking for suggestions. Still a daily driver for my commute, but do the weekend thing from time to time.

    Suggestions on what works best?

    2020 Model to be specific

if it’s anything like earlier years, cut and re route to the side of the transfer case.

Cut it above the rear axle with a small turndown

Rare for exhaust to be really badly damaged unless you're talking rock bouncing. I dragged my frame center across a few river crossings and didnt get close to the exhaust.

Biggest concern for me offroading is pinch welds and doors. Rock sliders are a good investment if you're concerned about damage.

I don’t think OP was talking about that part of the exhaust.

well then throw a skid plate under the truck. It’s a truck, he’s off-roading it... it’s gonna get damaged. Pull off the bandaid so you can enjoy it for what it is!

That's just it. It's not "what it is" or we wouldn't need to cut it and add skids!!

    Maybe a Wrangler??

I high centered over some rocks, from my transfer case all the way down to the rear differential and bent my tow receiver. The exhaust pipe was scratched and bent but still functions well. Pretty much a re route will be needed if you don’t want to damage it.

    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
Get a skid, reroute the crossover pipe, and bob the end, or do all three (as mentioned above).

The cheapest and easiest was cutting the back part of the pipe on mine, I cut the end off that bends around behind the rear wheel myself with a sawzall and added a $10 spout tip from O’Rielley’s like this. Some cut it off before the last hanger for even better clearance (like Stun Gun’s), but the exhaust blows out from behind the truck better when idling while parked or when driving slow this way and still gives you pipe clearance, especially behind the rear wheel for driving over stuff.

BTW- that’s really not rust, it’s my New Mexico baked on red clay experiment!

Cut it off rear axle :) IMO I like it not seen. A lot cleaner that way. Stupid ass exhaust exit behind rear tire. Just my 2cents

totally agree. Not only is it a much wiser option for off-road use, but it is also much more aesthetically pleasing.
