I looked on Craigslist for nearly a year and a half and there were maybe 8 short bed shells that popped up, and half of them were priced just a few hundred under new price.

Seems to be a better market for first gen shells down here than second gen, but don't remember how many were short bed or not.

Anyway, it's a bit of a slog unless you're lucky. I ended up getting pretty lucky in the end but it's not easy.

copy thanks.. I called a bunch of dealerships as well. They wouldn't separate the canopy of the used trucks they had...

You could try doing the same to the lower tier of used car lots if you have any that fit the bill.

We have a main drag here in town and the south end of it is at least a dozen small used car lots, I just drove by one the other day and behind it they had about 10 camper shells - none of the trucks in the lot had them, so my guess was they don't sell as well with the shells on. I assume they throw the shells on Craigslist or something but might be worth checking into.

CL. Call and visit used topper dealers. I had to drive 100 miles to pick mine up, after stalking CL for a couple of months.

I searched Craigslist for about a year before finding one that was a good deal. If you're trying trying to find one that's already painted to match your truck, you'll have to be patient. Also, keep in mind that getting a topper painted can be pretty pricey.

I want to know how much difference there is between a first gen and a second gen. Need to research part numbers. If they are the same, you just doubled your odds of finding one.

I've been looking for one for my 2nd gen Tundra for 2 years. Tundra trucks are much more rare than Tacoma trucks. I don't see me finding a used one anywhere near me. Pretty much excepted the fact that I'm buying new.

1st gen is a compact truck. 2nd gen is a mid-size. I am pretty certain that 1st gen topper will not go on a 2nd gen.

I'm not entirely sure. Like I said, I want to look at part numbers. I dont have one of these caps, but I would love if someone from both generations could measure their beds.

Same here. Finding a color-matched one will be next to impossible. Are you set on a hard-top (fiberglass/aluminum)? I ended up going with a retractable canvas soft top (www.softopper.com). They are about $650-$700. A Bestop (www.bestop.com) is another route that has plastic windows.

It was less than half the price of a new hard topper, and I also wanted to retain the use of my bed for high clearance shiz that wouldn't fit under a hard top. I also have nowhere to store a shell if I ever needed to take it off the truck. J

Just a thought; good luck in your search

I do know for a fact that my Truxedo toneau cover from my first gen long box fit perfectly on a Chevy S-10 long box. Just some random knowledge that someone may find useful.

I wouldn't go that far... The used dealer I got mine from had 5 or 6 different Leer, ARE, SnugTops sitting around. All for short box, all white color matched. I came there to get the Leer, but they brought out a forklift and let me try all the other ones on. Ended up with the Leer 100XQ at the end, because it was in the best condition out of all of them. The total was $1200 from what I remember and the only thing it did not have was the roof rack tracks. Local Leer dealer quoted me $2800 + tax and installation for the same shell.

Expand your search. $1600+ in savings is worth a road trip.

    So what?!

You may find it frustrating to here the same questions asked, but things are bought and sold everyday. You never know if what you are looking for just popped up, but you are not aware of it. Other people reading the tread may be able to clue you into where to look.

Plus, venting frustrations in public may offer a person some mental relief.

My pet peeve: People that give one line responses that offer no value to a thread.
