I noticed my 4th gear is starting to get a little sluggish and I’m trying to think ahead. Who’s the best online source for rebuilt R150 manual transmissions?

I’m a little spoiled here is the South Bay, we have a local rebuilder called All Standard Transmission. They do an awesome job and offer the good Christian discount.

    Have you checked local?

I have not. Going to a guy that owns a shop and goes to my church next week after Easter to check it out, Hopefully it’s just low on oil or something.

yeah, had mine done there but are you sure about the Christian thing...They gave me a really racy calendar when I paid the bill. When I was kid that kind of thing was common but alas no more so I was really surprised. Wife complained but I told her how could I say no?

AFIK you have to bring in the trans, they don't remove.

... you know you can just check that, right? Like you don't need a shop or a buddy... The MT will have drain and fill plugs- you can remove the fill plug and put your finger in there to check the level. 6 sided socket- 24mm.

Wait till he sees the cost to pull and rebuild a trans, then he will rethink his approach. What does sluggish mean with respect to a MT anyhow.

Usually what happens on these is it starts popping out of 1st gear because of too much thrust. That can also be because of shift bushing.

That’s correct, you bring them the core, or they have one on the shelf.

I picked up a fully rebuilt trans for my 88’ 4Runner and they didn’t charge me the core, and I brought it back in once I had it swapped out.

My old trans was howling really bad. Someone didn’t put a pilot bearing in the previous clutch job, so the input shaft was wobbling all over the place and cause all sorts of problems. New trans is smooth as butter.

Mine was in really bad shape, popping out of first gear, input shaft worn, input bearing trashed, 5th gear shaft splines broken (seen this before on other 98/99 R150 trans). They happened to have a 5th gear shaft on hand they gave me. They still had to buy a lot of parts from Toyota, input shaft, bearings, bearing retainer, 2nd gear synchro brake. I have used them before and they always get it right first time.

I almost took it to Marlin but I think their pricing/rebuild model is different. Its like a fixed price deal and if your core has excessive wear they will not rebuild it, at least that's how I read it. Probably if I dropped mine with them they would have taken it apart, told me no bueno and I might have been stuck with a box of parts.

I know, I’ve changed a half a dozen times. I need to bring it for a few other things and figure why they’ve got it on the lift they could check it.

When I first start the truck and I’m driving and going through the gears the RPMs are revving as I go through each gear as if the transmission is starting to go. When it warms up it goes away. I’m gonna get off my ass and check the level today

Sounds like you might need a clutch.

    What’s that cost to replace?

+1 this was how mine was when the clutch was going. Looking at $2-300 in parts doing it yourself, or $6-800 with a shop.

    Carefull with Marlin crawler.

Bough my 2002 with a previously installed trans from them at 250k. At 375k now and the trans is notchy going into gear and whines like a mofo. Had a AISIN complete clutch kit installed when i bought the truck (305k) thinking the whine was a throwout bearing plus the trans had a leak. Trans shop that did the clutch tried to fix the leak 3 times and the trans just would not seal. I just keep an eye on the level and she still whines. Would not trust buying another Marlin trans.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Before the massive price increases my Local guy installed all the bearings threw in any other parts from his supply of goodies .

For $500.00 he does all my drive shaft work as well.

No worries any problems it is 20 minutes away no freight shipping back and forth !
