Yep, the "pillar mod" can be used for quite a few things. Like @HawkShot99 and I'm sure many others, mine has a dedicated GPS there. For my phone, I use the Panavise. Both make for convient access and viewing.

I love the Offroam as well. It's solid, does not block the vent, can still adjust them from side to side, and can close it some but not all the way, which works for me.

When I had a phone mount in front of a vent it worked great in the summer, but caused overheating during the winter. Even when I had the heat set on windshield defrost enough air came out the vent to overheat my phone.

That wouldn't be fun. I haven't had that problem in the past and this Offroam keeps my phone further away from the vent than the previous generic holder I was using. First winter with it. I also tend to place my phone in there with more of it extending on the top end. But yeah, I wouldn't be a fan if its placement was impacting my phone's performance.

I’ve had several. Currently I don’t have a phone mount in the Tacoma. I plug it in, it pairs to the head unit and I put it in the cubby forward of the shifter. Since I don’t drive it much it hasn’t been a problem. But on longer drives, the cubby gets hot enough to get the phone hot and stop working.

This one sorta worked in the Tacoma, I replaced the cd slot thumb screw with a bolt and nut so I could shove it in the cd slot and tighten until it made a cracking plastic noise. It still had to constantly be shoved in tighter or it would work itself loose and fall out.

This one, another stupid design, used gravity for the lower arm to rest against something. You hit a bump it would jump up and down throwing the phone out.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LPM9IBO?ie=UTF8

This one is the same brand as the previous, a well designed cradle. I made it just loose enough to slide the phone in and out. It was able to hold it in over bumps unless the bump was extreme enough to slam the top of my head against the roof. I didn’t use the vent mount, instead took it apart and screwed a piece directly to my work truck dash. It lasted over 5 years, ended up breaking when I tried to remove it.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UJGVIK6?ie=UTF8

This one I’m using in my work truck now. Ram mounts are excellent but takes 2 hands.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JUW8Z1K?ie=UTF8

Offroam makes what looks like a good vent mount option that doesn’t clip to the vent, it clamps into a corner. But the odd sized 20mm ball isn’t going to work with Ram mounts. I don’t like the squeeze the sides cradle.
    https://getoffroam.com/products/air-vent-ball-mounting-base-toyota-tacoma-2nd-gen-2005-2011

I read through every page. Some are no longer available.

So I’m thinking I could use the Offroam mount with a Macally cradle and maybe some Ram balls and arms.

I’m curious if anyone has already tried doing something similar.

Great until your phone over heats and turns off. I have yet to find a more convenient mounting location though, so my phone stays hot, lol.

I rock a Nite Ize magnetic ball mount. Flat metal disc attaches to the back of the phone/case, ball mount adhesive to the dash or flat surface. All u gotta do is slap it up there & be done. Theres a rubber insulator in between that helps u angle or swivel it however u want and it stays put even in rough terrain. I have a mount ball in all my cars so it doesnt matter which one i get into. Super easy and u can but the pieces individually if needed on Amazon. 68DA8967-68CA-4D18-AB36-84F38EEBB5DC.jpg

Decided to post this pic since people keep talking about their phones overheating. Not really sure how people are mounting them. Been using it all winter without problems.

I just installed my offroam today and so far so good. Really tight grip on the phone and mount feels sturdy.

Offroam seems to be the best option as far as the mount base goes. I don’t care for window suction cups, cd slot, cup holder or pinch the vent types. If I decide I don’t like the phone cradle, I could try getting creative and build my own Frankenstein setup. I like the macally cradles. The ram cradle is secure but I don’t like needing 2 hands to mount or dismount.

I did the pillar mount w the x-grip. For a larger phone w an otter box it is absolute garbage. The phone would be more secure in a toddler’s hands.

New to the forum good to be here, first tacoma (2013 trd sport in Silver Mica)

Researched a bit and after a couple of weeks of throwing my phone in the cup holder I picked up the Hondo Garage 'Un-Holey dash mount' to pair with the Ram 'quick grip phone holder' Very happy with both.

Opted not to do the A pillar mount since it felt odd as a righty, and then in reading the user manual, found out left side phone/gps mount not advised due to the Driver side airbag in the pillar.

I have an Off-Roam as well. It's expensive, but I love it. Best phone mount I've used yet. Holds up well to aggressive wheeling as well.

I did get the offroam. It’s decent enough to use. One hand on and off. I figured out putting the cradle upside down works better. Cons: if I have the heater on, even with it set to blow at the floor, enough hot air comes out to overheat the phone.

The ram mount in my work truck is also decent enough to use. Cons: If I bump it, it twists. 2 hands required for on and off. The rubber grabbers wore out but replacements are cheap. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BTFIEJO?ie=UTF8&th=1

    I
had a macally mount which was my favorite. Slide it in slide it out. No squeezing or anything required. They changed the design so the one I had is no longer available, similar to this one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UJGVIK6?ie=UTF8

Check out the RAM quick grip for a one handed on and off. I swapped out mine from a RAM X-Grip for the same reasons and it's while it's plastic, and requires some assembly (screwing in posts, and attaching ball mount), it feels well built.

I've gone through the x-grip and the quick-grip and wasn't a fan of either (if anyone is interested I've got both I'll sell for cheap). Now I use this and its the best so far. One hand function. Solid grip. They make the mount in different strength spring options for both mellow driving, and all out sending.

I’ve tried sooo many phone mounts over the years. By far, this is the one I have had not a single issue with long term, off road, or daily driving … works great with my iPhone with a thick case . Has never fallen off. Just my experience with it.
UPDATE: 2 years strong and not one issue
