Dobinsons gang checking in. I've had it for two years with 0 complaints. Hasn't faded and never had water in my airbox. And yes, I've tested it in a few water crossings where it was up to the grill.

Ignore the other guy who told you its useless, he's just got some sand in his cheeks for whatever reason. If you are going to drive in dusty environments or do water crossings you definitely want it. Nothing worse than going through what you think is a small mudhole or creek only to have your front end take a dive and hydrolocking the engine. If you're never going to offroad in those sorts of applications then yeah. You don't need one.
If you're interested i did a whole how to video on the Dobinsons snork

I don't know about the 3rd gens, but the TRD CAI in the second gens can make use of a 4runner factory paper filter. I like the look and sound of my CAI, but I prefer the paper filter because it works and I won't risk oiling my MAF. Perhaps there's a paper filter that fits the 3rd gen performance intake?

Spot on. The TRD lower half is the same as the Stock CAI and has a metric ton of filtering media.

There probably wasn't any water in your airbox because there are drain holes in it.

Sealed with silicon but good job pointing that out. I'm sure people run snorkels without actually sealing the airbox and don't realize it.

Edit: and just to clarify my response wasn't sarcastic.

You may take this as like a grain of salt but this is what I experienced with the safari snorkle installed for almost 3 years now. Higher butt hp. Right off the bat after speed freak installed it , driving home from San Diego ,my taco seemed a little more responsive, a little preppy . Of course dyno test might show otherwise but I think its due to the air ram effect while driving with the snorkle . Installed kdmax 6.0. Its now like driving heaven. Instslled sy klone 9001 pre filter because we usually drive / explore/ camp in the desert/ mountains. Noticeable performance drop while driving is evident with the pre filter on. I attribute this to the loss of the ram effect. I took it out and plan on putting it back only when we plan on driving thru dusty roads. ( even posted ut for sale in marketplace a week ago but changed my mind and decided to just keep it ). A bonus is I like how it looks. Btw safari has 4 inch wide intake while dobinsons has the 3+ wide inch intake. Of course there's always this guy who says its ugly and useless but it's only his opinion. What matters is whats mine. Its my tacoma anyway .I love it.

Thanks for the responses. I started looking into these as some of the places we’ve been going has water crossings. We just got back from Glade Top Trail in Missouri and one of the guys got water into his throttle body of his 4th Gen 4Runner. It got me thinking it’s just a matter of time til it happens to me. We are planning various trips to the Ozarks and also Colorado/Moab this year.

As for performance, I’m not expecting any huge gains. I’ve just heard of some people getting better mpgs. I’m still running the stock air filter.

Hey Vork I am looking at AFE's website, what's the difference between the pro and the dry? The dry you clean in the sink? I am looking for the user manual as I type this out. Does Rigid vs Flexible matter? It's not like K&N where you have one choice LOL

That is what a stick is for.... probe those holes or if there's an alternate route, go around them. Work smarter, not harder.

There is a road there and a hot spring on the other side. Spring runoff was a bit higher than normal. By the time we were able to get enough wagons to pull it out later in the day the water had dropped a foot. I made it across, return trip was angled upstream a bit more and she didn’t go. Shit happens. Pucker factor was high when sideways and water starting coming in cab over window.

Back to the OP though. I always worried with a snorkel I would tear it off in the trees and brush. In this situation it would have helped, but that is once in 11 years and it will be another 11 before I try it with water that high. The dust protection would be nice and if/when I stick on the forced air bits it could be beneficial, would just like to see a more durable design. The carbon fiber low profile one looks like tree branches would slide over it and it wouldn’t be as obtrusive/vision blocking, but it’s spendy and I’m still thinking about options and where my build is going.

Not always. Even at 78 cents to the american dollar, the 70 series is hardly a bargain. 200 Series as well.
