after nearly 22 years my truck is finally in need of new muffler and tail pipe ...am having difficulty finding OEM for it so have to goto aftermarket most likely.

Just curious what anybody else has put on their truck (mine is a '97 4x4 xtraCab SR5 V6) and how you like it?

I had a lengthy conversation at the local Meineke recently and he was able to find 2 types AM muffler assembly part with pipe. One was a 'quiet-flow' and the other had the 'sporty rumble' that mine has (I Think) … not sure if they will need to do some cut-n-weld or not to the OEM system
    thanks,
    -Jj

Same as the factory bolts together fits good

Gibson on my 2nd gen and Borla on my V8 Land Rover. Both have a sporty growl but are tame enough to start in the morning next to your friendly old couple next door and ride down the highway and not drive yourself mad.

I use 40 series delta flow flowmaster. Don’t worry about the exhaust tip. I’ll be a surprise for other drivers

definitely need muffler, there is exhaust leaking under the bed and out that is clearly visible in the cold months, although the sound is not horrific imo, not like the old '96 Corolla that blew a hole near the sensor area :(

It has some mild surface corrosion on the stock pipe after all the years and might look better with the new chrome bumpers needed replaced after recent collision repair … I can take some pics perhaps when I get it back from body shop next week.

Then I will need to see if I need a pro-muffler shop to cut/weld off the old pipes or what I don't know, hard for me to get underneath and take a look at the situation (wish I had a lift in the garage!)

your not going to get a "best" muffler recommendation on a public forum. your going to get a bunch of opinions on what people have bought therefore they think it is the best type of recommendations. for some unknown reason the Toyota world seems to think that magnaflow is special and has special powers so there is always a lot of voted for magnaflow. truth is that magnaflow is nothing more than a shiny high priced glasspack, i.e. perforated tube wrapped in fiberglass packing, nothing different to a cheap a$$ cherry bomb. me personally, I'm a fan of chambered mufflers like flowmaster or other variants. they have a unique sound and have no packing to wear out. if your looking for a simple stock replacement, then any cheap turbo muffler will do.

Good deal. In the model I have, you can easily carry a conversation. It’s not very loud with windows up unless you Spike rpms. Hold it around 2k and it’s deep. Don’t expect to talk when merging on a highway:eek:

If you are unable to get underneath and take a look I would say yes you would need to take it to a shop to have the work done. Check YouTube videos for the muffler that sounds best to you and get the correct inlet/outlet size and position.
