Personally I have used Mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic blend in my truck and it did run great. But I now have 32,000 mi on my '08 4.0L and have switched to Royal Purple 5w-30 full sythetic 10,000 miles ago and I noticed a difference in power. I wouldn't say that I get better gas miliage from the change (about 10-30 mi difference on a tank, depending on how heavy my foot is) but I do drive on the freeway's, so I drive my truck at higher speeds and often have to punch it to gain speed to merge with on coming traffic(most noticealbe between 30mph to 60mph you feel the truck push forward with ease). . In my opinion I belive that Royal Purple has given my Tacoma a lot less lag and a noticeable difference in throtle response. If your looking for smoother performance I would say that Royal Purple would be the better way to go.

P.S. And remember alot of people usually get only get the Royal Purple oil filter and run Mobil 1 motor oil and other guys run OEM or Fram filters and run Royal Purple motor oil. I recommend using the whole Royal Purple system on just bits and parts. And Pep-Boys usually has sales on Royal Purple for $49.99 for 5qts. & 1 Royal Purple oil filter.

$50 for the oil and filter thats not to bad I spent $60 dollars for the oil and filter when I ran RP. I use Mobil1 extended performance now though good stuff. RP just to expensive to change every 4000K

I bounce back and forth between Castrol and Mobile 1. I have to tell you though, as much as I laugh uncontrollably at the Castol Edge commercials, I have been favoring that lately (Yes I am aware that is not a "real" reason). I even tried to spank my wife with a dipstick...

I will not go into the details of how my personal life spun out of control afterwards!

not to many, love it the way it is
^ women are very good at deciding whats right and whats wrong, if you spank her with your dipstick enough times maybe she can help you decide on the correct oil :)

Ding Ding Ding - We got a winner!!

    http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/API.html

    Now for the bonus question.

If you change the oil filter every 3,000 miles, when does the filter work the best, when you first put it on? Or right before you change it?

Answer: it is filtering its best right before you change it.

Toyota uses their OEM filters, which test very well in comparison tests. They will use their branded oil (dino) unless you specify/purchase/provide a different oil, depending on the dealer. My local Toyo dealer offers the option to have Castrol GTX, Mobil 1, or Valvoline long life put in instead of Toyota oil, at a slightly increased cost of course.

I change the gasket on the drain plug every 2 - 3 oil changes.

I've used Mobile 1 synthetic in several different Jeeps and Toyotas with great service. Synthetic oil is a few more bucks but in my opinion is the way to go. I use synthetics in my Buell and ATVs but you have have to be cautious in wet cluch applications or your clutch plates will slip with some oils.

Penzoil Platinum. 20 bucks at China-Mart. OEM filter. Changed every 3k. Christ, at 3k I could run dino and not worry.

In the end, or OCI's will dictate if you should go with an extended life oil. If you are at 3k, try them all. I mean, these engines can go 5k no problemo. If you are doing over 5k, I would look into Mobil 1 Extended or Aimsoil if you need greater OCI's.

Because for $3 more you can get Penzoil Platinum at Wally World. Also, 5 qts.

Penzoil Plat. FTW! Best oil IMHO. (excluding Royal Purlpe/Amsoil)

I personally run Castrol GTX 5w-30 in my 09' Tacoma but it's all in what you prefer. I'm not saying that it's the best or worst just that I believe it's a quality oil as well as many other oil brands on the market.

i used the generic brand Walmart oil in my Acura Integra for 200,000 miles and had no oil related issues. when the synthetic came out, i switched to that for a few bucks more. i just sold the Integra and it had 319,000 miles on it.

you becha' tuckus i'm gonna use the Walmart generic synthetic in my NEW Taco, and a little more often than the recommended interval.

    see you in 317,432 miles!
