I have a 2nd gen Tacoma SR (4 cyl, 2wd) that gets 27 mpg from mostly highway driving. 27 mpg was the EPA estimate for highway when I bought it. I'm looking to replace it soon. I see the 2023 Tacoma SR is rated at only 23 mpg and I can't stomach a 15-20% increase in my fuel costs.

Does anyone have a guess at what the new 4 cyl non-hybrid turbocharged engine in the 2024 SR will get? I see that people are guessing 27 mpg for the 4 cyl hybrid Tacoma.

Pick a number of 15 to 30 and you will land somewhere between there considering you will keep it stock. I think a good bet will to be to look at what the new Colorado and Canyon are getting.

My guess would be 26 mpg below about 55-60 mpg. At highway speeds 21 mpg. When tubos kick in gets worse mpg and increased power. This seems to be the case on every twin turbo. I don't know exactly what speed tubos will kick in. A friend has a 2.7 F150 gets 28 mpg below 60mph. Over that and gets 18 mpg. So something like that and maybe a little better for mid size truck.

20-23 mpg More HP more torque and its a heavier truck. Remove that airdam and it probably drops below that.

Yours a 5 Lug? Guessing so based on your mpgs. They quit making those now all of them are 6 lugs and ride higher. Why the mpgs took a hit. Highly doubtful the 4G will get much better, maybe the hybrid will do better, but the upcharge will be a lot, so no savings.

Yep, 5-lug. Guess I'll have to plan on making this truck last a bit longer.

You could get a Maverick. Good mpg 5 lug Fwd and only two options metallic red paint and fullsize spare. 8 spd auto like the 4th gen, but no frame.

If you don’t need 4WD, I would probably do one of those city vans. Buddy of mine had a Ford Transit Connect cargo for hauling his mountain bikes, mid 20s mpg, paid under $20K for it. Loads of cargo space.

I thought Ford discontinued the transit connect in the US? I like the connect.

My 2.3 turbo Bronco Big Bend with standard tires (similar engine, weight, and tires to what SR will have) manual trans gets about 21 around town and 26 on the freeway. Usually average just over 23 combined. I drive the speed limit. I would expect the 2.4 Tacos with standard tires to perform about the same. IMO the gas penalty is small price to pay for the drastic improvement you will get in performance vs that old 4 banger. Hell, it’s a drastic performance improvement over the v6 I had in my 3rd gen Tacoma.

I could definitely live with that kind of mpg.

I've never had a problem with the "performance" of my truck. It has enough acceleration to get me on the freeway and up hills, even fully loaded or towing a trailer. I don't race it.

The turbo kicks in when the engine load increases. Speed is irrelevant, with accelerations air flow increases and the turbos spool adding more and and more fuel.

They did, probably get a great deal on the ones that are left. Too bad they aren’t AWD, be perfect for my wife as she is constantly hauling boxes, art and printing supplies back and forth to school.

I do like those Customs. Be great little camper van. Wonder if Ford will bring them here since they discontinued the Connect.

A 2024 Tundra SR 2WD is rated for 24 mpg highway, so I'd certainly hope an equivalent 2024 Tacoma would get at least 26 highway. Add 4X4 and heavier option packages and you'd probably be down to 24. Just speculating here.

That would be cool if they showed up here but I doubt they will.

I'd go for the RC Ranger. 2.0t diesel 6spd manual standard 4wd.

The Transit custom is a cool looking van in base form. Stil more expensive in Fwd than the Ranger with 4x4.

Yeah, never come here too close in size the regular transit. Was checking out the low roof short wheelbase today. It isn’t too big. Nice size for running around. Tried talking my wife into it, said she likes her Tacoma better. The AWD version is more expensive than the Taco too.

Do like the looks of the Custom though. Reminds of the Toyota ProAce which is a rebadged Stellantis (Citroën Dispatch, Peugeot Expert and Vauxhall Vivaro.)
