I'm aware there are multiple threads for audio and such, but most of them end up going into tweeters and subs and other things... I am just looking to find the best bang for your buck door speakers for my '13. Always heard good things about Alpine and Kicker. Not looking to do competitions and shit, just looking to upgrade my stock speakers. Thanks guys

For factory speakers with your stock head unit I'd do 6x9 components or 6x9 2 way or 3 ways in the front doors and 6 1/2 or 6 3/4 for the rear doors. Something with a high sensitivity rating (90db or above) and a low wattage requirement would be ideal. JBL/Infinty, kicker, alpine, JL C1's, ect.

You can compare the sound of up to 4 speakers at a time on https://www.crutchfield.com/m_399/Car-Speakers.html

Kickers are a popular choice and JBL/infinity are known for bright tweeters, but I think alpine's are more refined. Read the reviews, compare the sound on a few and pick something. Your ears are different than everyone else's and theirs not a ton of difference to be had between different aftermarket speakers when using the stock radio.

Crutchfield advisors could probably recommend something more specific to your wants and needs.

New speakers will be a mediocre upgrade at best, do yourself a favor and sound deaden you doors and rear cab with whatever speakers you choose. This will provide you with the most return on your investment.

i plan on putting in an aftermarket head unit at some point as well, does it really make that big of a difference? are there any i should look at specifically for better sound? I'm just looking for a clear sound with mediocre bass, nothing too crazy haha.

I'd recommend looking into JL audio c1's or anything from Alpine like type s for a well rounded speaker for now until you upgrade your factory radio. Alpine type r (their high end) would compliment an aftermarket head unit nicely.

Aftermarket speakers have much larger magnets than factory and require more wattage to power them effectively. That's why I recommend something with a low wattage requirement and a high sensitivity rating like 90db or above. In theory, the more sensitivity the speaker has the less wattage it needs to bump. Your factory radio is probably only pushing 10 watts or so to the fronts speakers and maybe less to the rears. Read speaker reviews on Crutchfield. You'll see people install aftermarket speakers with a factory radio and then claim they get less bass, have to turn the volume up louder to get the same output as their factory speakers, or complain the factory speakers sounded better. For those reasons, high sensitivity and low wattage. The JL C1's are rated for around 50w and I'm sure the alpines are similar. (Some rms ratings are over exaggerated anyway.)

Infinity reference /JBL speakers are available with lower ohms like 3 instead of 4ohm, (increases speaker efficiency like a higher sensitivity rating), but both are known for bright sounding tweeters.

Furthermore, underpowered speakers are more likely to distort under high volume than slightly over powered speakers.

Also, try and stick with silk dome tweeters unless you like really bright sounds. Aluminum tweeters can cause fatigue over time. Treated paper or polypropylene material for woofers. Carbon fiber woofers do better more wattage.

Agreed on sound deadening no matter what you choose. You don't have to line the whole truck, but around the speakers, behind them, and the doors would be ideal.

    Does that help?

It’s not difficult just time consuming. It helps a little but not as much as you will be lead to believe. It’s a fun project if you like working on your truck. I did my door skins and then another layer on the frame and a third on the inside of the door panel. I did this to both fronts and the rears in my ac. Reduced noise from the outside a little bit. Didn’t do much for overall sound quality. Maybe if you gutted the interior and did the entire cab you might really be able to tell a different. Was it worth it? To me yes but like I said I enjoyed the project itself. Had I been doing it purely for the results promised on this forum I would have been disappointed.

I should’ve added I have the JBL package in my truck, fronts are only bass, was absolutely necessary from my end. Doors would rattle at minimum volume before sound deadening them. Was unbelievably annoying.

Never heard the jbl system so I’m not sure how it performs. I’ve heard it’s decent though. I went with hertz components up front and coaxial in the rear. Have 100 rms going to each of those and 300 to a jl 8 sub. Good little sub but can’t really keep up with the sound I get from the 6.5s so at some point that will be getting upgraded. I installed the sound deadening after the system and it does help a little but it’s definitely not a holly shit that’s what I was missing kind of thing. I didn’t really have much problem with rattle before I started though.

any specific model you'd recommend? was looking at the JBL 9632 for fronts but still unsure

and thanks for the heads up on the sound deadening. i dont really have a rattling issue, so it would be purely for recommendations from forums, so i'll probably save that for another time haha

Just keep in mind that whatever brand you land on keeping your system components correctly matched is key to good sound quality. If you get a nice expensive speaker that’s is rated for say 75-100 watts rms and don’t deliver them the power they need to work like they where designed to it’s going to sound worse then it does now not better. If you are staying completely stock other than speakers go with something that has a low rms or it’s just a waist of money.

I don’t remember the model numbers but I put 6x9 3-ways in the front and 6.5 inch inch the back doors, you’ll want to replace the tweeters also. I also put a kicker 300 watt amp in too , but I opted not to install any subs. The door speaker have plenty of bass in my opinion. I also eventually went with a Kenwood head unit.

You’re not going to get better performance from new door speakers. As mentioned by @MGMDesertTaco , the factory deck doesn’t have the mojo to power them properly. Save the money, get some Noico deadener, and get a headunit first.

Focal. I’ve had them for about 10 years and couldn’t be happier. I would imagine newer ones would sound even better. I have a Pioneer AVH 2330 nex head unit.
