I'm wanting to get an alarm/remote start installed pretty soon and was wondering if anyone has ever had one installed from best buy? Do they actually know what they are doing, do they stand behind their work?

It will depend highly on the guys they hired at your local store.I worked for Circuit City for years and we had a lot of GENIUSES working for us and a lot of asshats. It's just A shot in the dark as a consumer, whether they have a good tech in that location or not. It's even a biger shot in the dark that the great guy does your install.

This is the same at almost ANY electronics installation place, including the high end shops. Everybody has to start somewhere. what's worse... Even the best have bad days at installation. I've seen it all.

Not an alarm, but i have had them put stereos in two different vehicles. In both instances they did a great job. With that said, I try to trade with local shops as long as they are in the ball park cost wise.

Thanks for the responses. My locals shops are very expensive. I can prob save 100 bucks with best buy, but if that means a poor job then I'll spend the extra for the better job

I recently had a Nav/sat Radio installed at best buy and they did a good job. Their techs are part of the Geek Squad.

Being a part of the "Geek Squad" doesnt mean much..

My wife had one of those HP netbooks that she bought from best buy. All of a sudden the wireless internet stopped working on it. It was still in warranty so i took it to the geek squad to take a look, they told me the NIC card was done and had to be sent to HP to be replaced...

Took it back home, actually looked at it myself, turned out my wife accidentally uninstalled the network card driver...

Geek squad are a bunch of idiots

But then again it goes back to the whole shot in the dark on if you get a good one or not

I wouldn't let Best Buy change my flashlight batteries. They may have some competent installers somewhere (good luck finding them) but I detest them as a company, mostly because of the scam artists and outright thieves that they call the Geek Squad.

It will depend on the store, each store would have installers with varying amount of experience I would think. YMMV.

One of my sons works at Best Buy and I recently had a Viper 5706 installed there. The 2 guys that work in car installations at the local BB each have more than 10 years experience. They did a great job and I am more than pleased, it is a great system. I got the Smart Start and it was well worth it to me.

Yep, I had a Viper security and remote start installed by Best Buy. They did a great job and because they did the install you can go to any BB for any questions or warranty work. I got it for the remote start mainly cause I was working in Indie and it was f-ing cold, now I am back in the south, it is great for the AC.

The only thing is you have to carry your paperwork from BB in your truck when you go in for warranty or service. I have not had any issues and am really happy with it....

Wow, strong words, sounds like you have an ax to grind with them. The geek squad installed my home entertainment system. This was a rather complex, expensive system which included ceiling mounted surround speakers, outside speakers around the pool, and the electronics to make it all happen. Not only was it a first class installation, they sent a quality control guy out post-installation to insure everything was working properly and that I was satisfied with the job. Then I had a two year no interst deal to pay it off. Happy customer here.

Ive had a couple of remotes start and alarm systems installed by Futureshop. Its a lifetime warranty on the install so its a no brainer. Even if you got a chump installer, the master will have to sort it out.

They must have actual interviews in your area when they hire them. Cause every time I have dealt with them, they are snoody and condescending. I applied to work there when I lived down in Texas during college. Being that I routinely built and sold and repaired computers and was a computer science major, I kinda knew what I was doing.

Fast forward 5 years, aside from reading manufacturer's installation instructions, I learned that none of them really know what they are doing.

I had an aftermarket nav system with subwoofer installed in my altima by them, Not only did they not wire up the Sub incorrectly, they broke the wiring harness that plugged into the system and thought it was a good idea to hold it together using zip ties. When they ran the wiring for the ipod adapter into the glove box, the hole that they drilled in the plastic looked like they chewed it instead of drill it.

Im still on the fence about. Im going to talk to my local on thurs or friday and see what kind of numbers they through at. I would rather support the small business but if they are crazy expensive I might have to take that shot in the dark with best buy

i got a viper 4105v remote start installed last week, they messed my truck up completely (2011 trd sport). bc of them i lost my rearview camera, chirp/beep when i lock and unlock, and the lock unlock situation is all confusing and it doesnt work as advertised. they also didnt install the ENTIRE KIT becuase the guy said they normally just dont do it (the valet "kill swith" for the remote start). Pisses me off. So now i had to make another appointment a week later just to get them to fix it. waste of time. Looking back, if i had known all these problems would develop i wouldnt have gotten the remote start. you can search my threads because I did a long write on eveything they messed up. Good luck, but I wish I knew how to wire stuff bc I trust myself more than them now.

If you're interested, I did a write up on how to install a Viper 5704. There are a lot of things to do, but I wouldn't say it's terribly complicated. If you decide to tackle it, I'll help out as much as I can from 3,000 miles away. :) I did mine by myself a year ago and haven't had a single problem.

If you don't want to do it yourself, make sure you talk to an installer and not the salesperson. Ask the installer how many of these systems he's installed before. And how many of those have come back for additional fixes? And any other questions you can think of. I would ask questions like this no matter where you go to have it installed. Every place has experienced and beginners. Talk to a few of the installers at every place and schedule your install for a time when an experienced installer is working. That way you'll go into it feeling better and you'll be much less likely to have to take it back in.
