Hello all. Just bought a new 21 Tacoma TRD OR. I am looking to upgrade the tires and wheels. It is going to be left stock height and staying with 16 inch wheels to prevent rubbing. Going up to a 265/75/16. What tire has been the go to for winter driving in the mountains? I have read good things about the Wild Peak AT3w, Duratracs and KO2s. Can anyone offer up any advice?

I am going with a 16 inch SCS wheel. Either BR6 or Stealth 6. Thanks for reading.

I have the Falkens on my Tundra, bought them because of price and I like that the three Ws stand for Wear Wet and Winter. So far so good!

I had good luck with Cooper Discoverer's on my 2nd gen as a stand-alone winter tire. I'm running Cooper Discoverer A/TW hybrids on my 3rd gen. they are an all-year winter rated tire with the 3 peak snowflake winter rating. I've had them since last winter. I'm running stock size 245/75/16 on my SR5 DCLB. Good luck with your choice.

Falken AT3W. They’ve been great in all weather conditions. Highly recommended

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Wildpeaks (I've never had them personally) but I'd take KO2's over Duratracs!

A lot of people in the sierras like the st maxx for winter driving. Same with the ko2’s. It’s a different type of snow/Slushy wet pavement than up north in Canada and east coast so these tires generally get shat on by them, but actually do great out here. Look at what all terrains tires the Tahoe area contractors and chain control trucks use: ko2’s (when they’re not on straight up snow tires like blizzaks).

Duratracs also get good grades out here but aren’t as durable and get noisy pretty quick. A few buddies run toyo at3’s and like them too. If you’re going deep snow, then a mud terrain is going to do better than an at... but that’s about it.

    Falkens or duratracs

My duratracs have no problem in the snow

Everyone defines winter driving as a little different.

I'm running the Falkens so that's what I'm voting for. :D Last year I got caught camping behind a pass that evoked traction laws overnight, thanks to a light 3" dump over Memorial Day. Those Falkens saved me from a lengthy detour. They feel pretty solid in dry, snow, wet, and mud. Best all around tire I have found so far.

Really any tire that has the three peaks certified is a good winter tire. Some just perform a little bit better than others in certain terrain but there still no big difference. Example K02s are great on the winter roads but the Falkens performs a little bit better on the snowy trails.

Totally agree. I’ve been in a few situations that I thought were going to be sketch but turned into a non event. I’ve been super impressed. Currently on my second set after 56k on the first set.

I live at like 9800 ft in the CO mountains and ran Duratracs on my last vehicle, they were great. Got ko2 for the Taco, they were good offroad in summer but not great in snow, the traction just wasn't as good as the Duratrac. In August I picked up the Toyo at3 and we've had several snow storms already and I'm pleased with them so far, definitely better than the ko2 so far in my opinion

Went with the wildpeaks on my sr5. I posted this in another thread but they ate up the 14" of fresh snow in front of my house last week and then also the resulting slush the next few days. Very happy with them.
