    Hi guys,

So over the past few weeks my serpentine belt ( or at least I believe it is) has begun to squeak intermittently. My truck only has 28K and its almost 6 years old.

Yesterday I sprayed the belt with water and the squeak disappeared for about 10 seconds, then it came right back. I spray, it disappears, then comes back.

I know these belts should go longer then 28k, but maybe the age of the belt is causing it to squeak?

Should I just replace the belt and see if that alleviates the issue? Or could it possibly be a pulley.

    Thanks for the help,

    Mike

Probably a pulley, but it won't hurt to change the belt just to see. When you have a bad pulley bearing, spraying water on the belt just causes it to slip and put less load on the pulley. Think about just doing them all with the Gates kit from Rock Auto.

I just replaced my Alternator Tentioner Pulley and Serpentine Belt. It was not squeaking though. It was whining. I cannot spell as you can see. Sorry

Take some brake lube or other similar paste type lube, apply it to a couple spots on the belt with the engine off, start engine and see if noise is gone or if it changes. If it does go away, the belt is the likely culprit. If the noise remains, suspect pulley.

Even a bar of bath soap will work for this diagnosis.

My truck is the same age and a bit less miles. I'd be shocked if there was a pulley problem at this point.

Holding off cause it only squeeked those couple days it was raining and humid. FYI, don't put anything on ur serpentine belt (grease or lube) to test it other than spraying it with a little water If the noise goes away immediately it's the belt that is the problem.
