If you had to paint ABS plastic, would you use bedliner spray or Plastidip for durability? I can use Plastidip without a primer coat, but does the bedliner need it on plastic? I'm wanting to do but the lower bumper grill that is grayed out looking.

Plastidip is in fact often used in applications that are meant to be non-permanent and easily removed (think coloring stock emblems/trim/grilles/wheels and wanting to be able too go back to stock for resale or recoloring later), and I've found that once damage starts, it tends to wear at the damaged edges quickly.

Plastidip also seems to be harder to touch up without obvious spray marks or borders, as opposed to bedliner which you can often just spray over without very much feathering.

Regarding bed liner (rattlecan stuff) on plastic parts, I've found that a layer of Krylon Fusion as a base coat/primer makes the bed liner stick much better. It seems to particularly help with limiting impact damage to the bed liner (chunks coming off) in cases where the plastic part deforms under impact but returns to (more or less) its original shape, and also makes it a hell of a lot more resistant to flaking under abrasion.

As with any surface coating, substrate preparation is KEY, especially on glossy plastics. Clean, dry, de-greased, and pre-scuffed with a brillo pad are the parameters for success with Fusion and plastics, and ambient temperature and humidity are also important. Basically... Follow the directions on the can!

Great thanks! I bought a can of satin black Krylon Fusion last night that I was going to use today. I prepped it by scuffing it all up and then wiping it down with rubbing alcohol. I also have a can of spray on bed liner, but I just don't want to mess something up and have to redo everything.

I'm not sure what you're painting, but if you're doing it /on/ the truck, be sure to be particularly careful with your masking job. That bedliner can get fine droplets EVERYWHERE and it is a real pain in the ass to get off!

I've got a few coats of Fusion on it and I think I'll stick with just that. I'm afraid of trying to spray bed liner on top of it and messing it all up. It's got some texture right now due to scuffing up the plastic and it kind of looks cool the way it is.

It turned out good, same with the guy's post above you. I was about to coat it bed liner on top of the Krylon Fusion, but I spent a lot of time and elbow grease prepping that piece not to mention just getting it off the truck, that I didn't want to mess it up beyond repair. It probably would've been fine, but I didn't want to chance it. I've read nothing but good things about Fusion paint holding up, and with the texturing from the drill attachment, it actually looks like fiberglass now. Maybe down the road I'll get another wild hair and decide to do something different, but for now this works. If I didn't have the light bar mounted behind it, I probably could've masked it all off and painted it while it was on the truck, but I didn't want to risk messing up the light either.
