Homeowners insurance excludes automobile accessories. Don't waste your time with that angle.

If OP wasn't at fault I don't understand why the at fault party isn't paying for the topper?

Probably been covered, but not your fault. The insurance is legally liable to make you whole. Which includes any and all aftermarket products. If they refuse then go speak with an attorney, or threaten it anyway and it will get fixed.

I had was rear ended in my 94 Toyota. Both of us had State Farm. No problems for either of us. I had a cap and value was added to the claim for that. The other party's insurance should pay for all damages. If not small claims court. Diminished Value is something you should also be going after. Don't let the bastards off the hook (Insurance company and person that hit you). I have had good success with refusing to settle. Seems they are measured by how fast they settle claims. The longer you drag it out the more you get at least in my case I have.

As mentioned- it is other parties insurance that you should be pressing to pay not using yours. Also as mentioned if the other driver is under insured for the damage that is done, then small claims is your venue to get compensated. Be careful that you sign no documents that indicate that the repair satisfy all current and future damages( I am sure there is some industry term for it) I would imagine that if you inform both the other party and their insurance company that you are going to pursue additional damages through small claims, you may see this issue corrected and you will have the other party on your side fighting to get the insurance company to pay.

Fuck'em file a warrant for debt ( in Va that's what it is called ) against the insured. I had to do this about 3 years ago when a driver with out looking came into an occupied right turn lane (my lane) and I had to swerve to avoid hitting him. Called cops no citation issued but had police report and case number. I had to get an alignment new rim and new wheel bearings on the right side of my vehicle Ford ranger at the time from hitting the curb ($800 bucks).... His insurance said no way are they paying I said oh really? He was saying that I tried to over take him in a turning lane complete bullshit. Then came the day @ the court house when the Insurance company offered me $300 bucks before we went in front of the Judge I said nope. I will plead my case in front of the Judge and see what happens... Judge ruled in my favor plus 3 days pay for missed work and inconvenience (shop estimates and repair time) and fees for a total of $1750 bucks.

Then the asshole Adjuster or company legal rep made some snarky bullshit remark in the lobby of the court house to the effect that this will haunt you forever in the insurance companies data base... I then kindly said what because I won?

+1, when a lady ran a stop and totaled my 1983 F150. I turned down 3 or 4 of their offers. There were trying to get me to settle quickly because they were paying for rental. You are in the drivers seat but the insurance company would like you to think they are.

I have State Farm, have no additional coverage added to my truck insurance to cover aftermarket parts or personal property, etc.

My agent only requires pictures of the parts on my truck for it to be covered by my policy. No receipts, either. They go off of retail cost for replacement value.

Anybody with added components needs to make sure their insurance policy covers them. I still confirm my policy stipulations when I add parts, every time - usually before the parts are installed just to make sure everything is as it should be.

I lost out on about $4K is stereo gear that was stolen and State Farm refused to pay on, stating it was not OEM. I asked my agent before it was all installed a few years prior to the theft and was told as long as it was "permanently installed" I was good, even down to a Walkman with a cassette adapter plugged in. Fast forward to the day after when I went into the office with a stack of receipts and the police report, I was told I was SOL, and that State Farm requires "Accessory Riders". After speaking to a friend of mine that was a lawyer, I was told pretty must the same thing.

Your policy SHOULD cover a certain amount of aftermarket/personal belongings. Nearly all policies do unless you are with an insurance company who usually insures bad drivers (The General) and/or you have negotiated your policy down to bare bones. You will need to go over the policy carefully. You should have coverage for personal items.

A little bit of an update.

We both have State Farm insurance. My policy does cover the cover through my personal property policy. The issue is her insurance does not. After being on the phone for almost two hours today talking to State Farms main office, my cover is being paid for through my policy. They are going to go after their losses through the other parties insurance. It will cost me nothing out of pocket. All I have to do is pick a cover and send it to the repair shop.

The one thing that really sucks about all this. I'm driving a freaking Corolla while my truck is getting fixed.

lol yeah tell me about it. When Toyota had my truck for a few weeks, they gave me a Camry to use the entire time...averaged mid 30's in mpg. Got back in the Tacoma and it was back to half that :(

My truck sure is a hell of a lot more fun to drive though.

What if you were carrying something in the bed and it was damaged? Would they say too bad on that? What a crock..

State farm can't claim her insurance doesn't cover the cover on another vehicle because the above is BS. No different then claiming they don't cover Porsche's or Ferraris if struck by their policy holder. I'd ask to see it on paper so you can send it to the state insurance commish to see if it's legal.

Bout all they can really do is have a cap on coverage and I'd bet your damage is way under said cap.

Hey OP when all said and done tell the sleaze ball agent you are going to change insurance companies, when he asks why tell him "your hands are tied". I used to have my Insurance license for Geico...believe me the insurance companies dont care about you, so i say no loyalty to the legalized scammers.

I agree with bryn67 , tell State Farm to pound sand . You should not have to argue to get what's owed.
Also I have found their prices easy to beat, tie that to poor service and it's a no brainer.

typically, unless you specify to insurance that you have certain aftermarket parts (and therefore pay more each month) they wont cover it.

That is for sure. They jacked my homeowners 2 years in a row. I found a great company that covered house and cars for cost of State Farm for vehicles only. I had been with State Farm for 25 years.
