The most I've put on was 20, 50lb sacks of sugar and a couple of heavy duty storage racks

    Had no issues :)

Payload ratings are based on all payload, not just payload in the bed. Your body counts as payload too. 1,120 to 1,620 lbs is the payload range on the Tacoma. Odds are your build is closer to 1120 than 1620.

In my '15 access cab long bed I have had 2 people & 1500 pounds in the bed & didn't have any issues. I have also hauled half ton of rocks on many occasions with no issues either

I've had my 07 access cab loaded with stone that had it riding on the bump stops in the back (after the aal in there for the lift as well). It wasn't a long trip or off road but nothing broke. I would just be a little concerned about losing some travel if it's weighed down too much.

What's strange about this is that if you take the curb weight + weight of passengers = not much allowed in the bed. For example if curb weight is 4480 on the DCLB and you have 2 passengers at approx 300 pounds and the GVWR is 5600 pounds, then that means the bed can only carry 820 pounds if I am doing the math right. That seems kinda low to haul in the bed.

    Nope thats correct.

    Taco 4x4 6ft Payload 1120
    Taco 4x2 6ft Payload 1370

    Tundra 4x4 5.5ft Payload 1530
    Tundra 4x2 5.5ft Payload 1630

“Payload capacity” is the calculation of GVWR minus curb weight

Tacoma is a 1/4 ton truck
Tundra is a 1/2 ton truck

    F250 would be a 3/4 ton and F350 a 1 ton truck

So in essence, the Tacoma is really only rated to carry 500lbs in the bed when its considered a 1/4 ton but that is with a full cabin of passengers, take out the passengers and you can haul lets say up to 900lbs saying that the driver weighs 220 in a 4x4 truck.

strange so i guess with 2 people and approx 1500 pounds in the bed in my access cab was "technically" too much lol

Yep lol. Dont sweat it though, I put 2300lbs of rock in the bed of a Tundra when I was redoing the girlfriends parents backyard. It did fine but our travel distance was only about 4 miles. I wouldnt recommend it though, thought the tires and suspension were going to blow.

about a 2 inch gap between the well and the tire.

Which is another reason some of us badly want Hiluxes available here. ~2500lb payload vs 1100 taco. If you can cram all that capability in a midsize, why not sell it here.

If your looking at strict weight carrying ability, the weight of the people in your truck and amount of gas in your tank count against your 1100 pounds. Our trucks are officially rated to carry as much as minivans.

That said, the only time I've thought about how "best" to carry weight was when I loaded my 98 with a yard of dirt. While it's not good to be overloaded, It's really about how you plan to drive.
