Bed Stiffeners - What do they do? Do I need them?

This is a very common question we get at TOTAL CHAOS. If you're running a camper shell, bed rack w/ RTT, or just putting your truck through serious off-road abuse then you should consider Bed Stiffeners.

On 2005 and newer Tacoma's the composite bed is very weak. Over time they can fracture or crack causing issues with tailgate alignment and possibly lights. We reinforce the rear bed channels at the tailgate which is ideal for preventing bed flex and avoiding issues that come along with it.

The TOTAL CHAOS Bed Stiffeners also feature additional tie-down points. Adding a set will give you 6 tie down points and 2 light or whip mounts. *no load ratings are implied

Constructed of 3/16" steel these are built to last. We finish them in a durable black powder coat and include grade 8 hardware for the install. Are you running TOTAL CHAOS Bed Stiffeners or have questions about them? Post up

    NOTES from @82abnmedic

Installed Total Chaos bed stiffereners just now. Took less than an hour. I installed pass side first because it had less gap with tailgate closed. Pretty straight forward, good directions. Then the drivers side. I noticed 1/4" larger gap on this side. After tightening down the 2 lower bolts, I worked my way up from bottom on new drill holes and bolts. I could see the bed get sucked in as I did this. Huge difference in new gaps. Im confident about installing my new topper next week now. Not to mention, the extra strap points are sweet. Does not interfere with stock bedmat. Easy job, thanks TC. [/QUOTE]

I am curious what is patented about yours versus the others that are available. I need to get a set but want to know what is different or better about yours. Thanks!

@dawgspit Total Chaos Bed Stiffeners extend further vertically and maintain contour with the bed which allows for more contact than other brands such as cali raised. They also have a thinner vertical profile in respect to the bed of the truck which allows for ease of loading with large materials.
Go with TC, you will be very happy!

Sounds good! Do they work with the Decked system? Are there any specials going on right now?

Here is the patent # (D820,180) if you'd like to see exact details on the patent. As stated above, customers choose TOTAL CHAOS Bed Stiffeners over the competition since we offer maximum strength and coverage with minimal bed intrusion. Constructed of 3/16" steel these are built to last

We also offer additional tie down points and antenna/whip mounts. Adding a set will give you 6 tie down points and 2 light or whip mounts. *no load ratings are implied.

We have NOT installed a set with the Decked system. I looked at one the other day and the Tundra system appears to have enough clearances. On the Tacoma it will be similar. You might have to shave down a tiny bit of material on the corner of the decked system. We don't offer any discounts or specials, but one of our Authorized Dealers might be doing something.

Are they Left Side - Right Side specific? Can they be installed with added tie down points towards the rear?(side location flipped)

These are designed to be installed with the tie downs facing towards the front of the vehicle. They can't be flipped without additional vehicle modifications.

    Total Chaos -

Do you all fabricate these per order?

    Can you customize?

I am only asking because I would like to use your bed stiffeners yet still be able to place my AMP Bed Extender. Can they be made without the Eyelet tabs or keep the top one but without the Middle and Bottom eyelets and perpendicular flange?

I am just thinking but if you (or any user in TW) have any examples of your product working with a bed extender that would be greatly appreciated.

These are not built-to-order. Typically, we try to have a few sets in stock and build more when necessary. We can't offer any custom options.

On the Tundra forum, we had a similar question come up. If you attach these brackets to our Bed Stiffener you should be able to run the bed extender without issues. We haven't confirmed this works 100%, although it looks like a possible solution.

Total Chaos, Thank you for your quick response and the suggested part. I will test it out. I will post a picture on this thread of before and after if you would like for examples if any others have same questions.

For mockup, try attaching them with VHB tape. If it works you can always drill for a more permanent install. It's easier than drilling and finding out they won't work. Pics would be greatly appreciated.
