I have a 2009 DCLB with a camper shell on the back. I was looking around for a way to mount a mount bike on the side of the camper shell, maybe coming off the truck bed rail area. Found a picture of what Im looking for if you have bed racks but Im trying to find the same but with a camper shell.

I have a rack to haul the bikes from the hitch but when we are camping out the back of the truck its a PITA to get in a out of the bed with the bikes and rack.

Attached pictures - Tan truck has the bike mount style im looking for and the silver truck is mine with the camper shell. If you have seen this style mount let me know!!

@HomerTaco has a setup like you're looking for, although he had to modify (read: cut) his cap to make it work. not sure who makes the bike rack tho.

theres also http://www.kbvoodoo.com/shop/bed-rack-outboard-bike-mounts if you want to drill holes into the cap. not sure how the angles line up tho, since its designed for their rack. if your cap is a different angle the bike might be tilted in or out, although you could probly bend the mounts.

i need to design some of these to sell. Im thinking they need to attach to the bed rails, sit on top of the bed side cap, and stick out the side similar to the KB mounts.

Im not sure how to get them to work with a bed cap though. They maybe thin enough that you can squeeze them between the camper shell and bed side cap. Would probably need to fill in small gaps with some silicone though.

I have softopper over the rail bike rack mounts. They stopped making them unfortunately. They work fine but have found myself running into them a few times.

dont think it will be an easy option for OPsince his cap has a lip that goes over the bedside, if it was a flat seated one that would be a different story, could even make a angled bracket that attaches to the side rails

Yeah themore I look the more I agree that my shells desing would be a PITA to make something. May look at just trying to put something over the cab of the truck

Just hang the bike off the cross rails of the cap top rather then setting the bike on something.

Could also come out from the front of the bed between the cab and the gap between tailgate n bedside with some brackets to put the mtn bike rail on.

Looking for similar solution(over the bed rail bike mount) and its a shame the two mentioned brands' product; softopper and kbvoodoo are discontinued.

I'd also be interested if you make one that bends around a camper shell. I think the gasket on the cap could handle 1/4" or maybe 3/8", but it needs to bend down to accommodate the lip. Let me know if you want me to take measurements of mine.

My buddy had the same setup as you. He found an attachment that goes into the hitch and allows the bikes and rack to swing away to the side.

I've seen a couple of styles even back into the '80s but they were all before the newer bed designs and over the edge cap designs and just came straight out from under the shell. You'd need to find someone with a large enough brake to bend a piece the length you needed at the different angles. When I thought about building one back when I had my last Tacoma I got a quote from one of the local steel suppliers but I never followed up on it. I can't recall what they wanted but that was probably around 1998 or so anyways. I think one of the problems is that it's going to have to be thick enough to not bounce when going down the road or it may impact and crack the fiberglass but thin enough to fit within the space limitations of the shell design. You're also going to need some sort of filler material around the rest of the bed to keep the shell level.

It'd be a lot easier if you didn't mind cutting or drilling into your shell- and yeah, I was hesitant to drill a couple of small hols for my Yakima tracks.

I have the Kuat version - https://www.competitivecyclist.com/...N&ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6a3VhdDoxOjE1Omt1YXQ= and it was a total game changer for camping out of the back of the truck. In general I love it and would buy it again, so far we've found it to be tough as nails. I can't tell you how many ledges I've dragged it down without damaging it. That said, it would be really nice to no drag anything when dropping down ledges or going through ditches/creeks/washouts. The back right hand corner (the pivot itself) hags down pretty low and there's not a thing you can do about it.

I'd be up for a bedside rack in a second, the next choice will be a CBI rear bumper with a receiver equipped swing out. That would lift the rack up 18+" and solve my problems. A bedside rack would probably fit the budget a lot better though.

I need to mount the awning on the opposite side next season. Walking all the way around the swing out gets a little old after a while.
