Whether I like it or not, the bed will be removed or lifted to replace the fuel pump on my 2018 short box double cab Sport. What do I need to look for when I pick up my truck? The service advisor told me that the the replacement of the fuel pump and 40,000 mile service should take only three or four hours. He also told me that they have had absolutely no problems using this replacement procedure.

Run your tank down to nearly empty and tell them you want them to do the repair per the procedure if your uncomfortable with them lifting the bed.

Otherwise, before you drop off the truck take pictures of where the bed sits in relation to the cab and to the rear bumper. Also take pictures of all the panels and check for any damage after. Finally, remove your bed mat before dropping it off so you can inspect the bed bolts for possible damage (stripping out the head)

I had mine done and they removed the fuel tank, took about 1.5 hours total.

I agree, I'd have no problem with them lifting the bed to replace the fuel pump. This is pretty common practice on most other pick-up trucks. Just make sure the gas filler neck and all associated vacuum lines are connected when you pick it up.

This actually brings up another thing that I forgot to mention. After getting the service done, go to the nearest gas station and fill your tank. You will be able to make sure that they installed the filler net correctly before your gas light is on and need to get gas.

I had mine done, 1/8 tank of gas left in. I have a camper shell on my truck and ask about it causing a problem. They told me they just drop the tank from underneath when it’s up on the hoist, no bed removal needed. That was my experience.

They always drop the tank to replace the fuel pump. I never seen them remove the bed.

When I had mine in they requested the back seats be empty and mentioned nothing about the bed. Took about an hour.

Apparently some dealers are removing the bed. I don’t like the idea but my next closest dealer is 60 miles away. I have always had good service from my local dealer. Been using them for almost thirty years. Guess I’ll have to trust them. However, I am taking a bunch of pics and measurements before I take my truck in. The service department folks also take pics.

Thought on the short bed double cab the fuel pump was located under the cab itself on the truck, making it a drop tank only option ?

I had mine done yesterday. I brought it in with less than 1/8 of a tank of gas. The repair was done in less than half a day.

Most Techs are paid by flat rate. If a job pays 1.5 hours you get that if it takes either 3 hours or 30 minutes. Every Tech if different. We try and short cut to make money. The important thing is the Techs pride on the work being done. Going by the book repair procedure is all about safety and liability. Short cuts are great if done properly with pride and care.

I know one on iFunny (don't judge) and he said they drop the tank and it usually takes 1.5 hours.

He does them all day every day so he can do them with his eyes shut at this point haha

I agree with you. I always drop the tank unless the truck is a total rust bucket..2 Straps and assorted lines and harness and tank is down.

    Hold a moment.....

Remove bed for about 4 hours labor. Dealer procedure. Owner uncomfortable.

Remove fuel tank for about 1.5 hours labor. Toyota procedure. Normal owner comfort level.

Drive 60 miles to a different service shop.

Around here, labor is $125/hour. 2.5 hour labor savings will pay for the 60 mile drive (round trip) to consume roughly 4-5 gallons of fuel and leave $$ in your pocket.

Seems to me like a simple decision.

    Its a recall, no charge.

But they dont remove the bed, the unbolt it, then prop it up with wood blocks so they can fish the pump out the wheel well opening.
