    Hi guys,
I am thinking of outfitting my bed now. I would like to be able to store stuff for trips, shovel, tracks, e.t.c bit still have the flexibility for weekend activities like, carry a golf bag securely, transport trash to the dump, carry a tall object like a refrigerator.
For this I considered the "decked" system bit I would probably need a way to raise the side rails when fetching something tall.
I like the bed racks for the tenting ability and carrying off roading equipment but I don't like that it would prevent me from fetching a large appliance from the store or make my weekend trip to the local dumpster.
The ultimate fit for me would be a decked system, with a modular bed rack that allows the top to be removed easily(leaving the side rails on in case I am fetching something tall like an appliance) for weekend jobs . The baby must earn its keep too.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.
    Raj

It's not cheap, but the Yakima Overhaul & Outpost HD racks are easy to remove - I have the Overhaul and leave the front portion on all the time and add the rear when I need the full rack (currently just using it for a skybox since we're a family of five). 2 hex keys and the back portion comes off in about 2 minutes. If you got the additional side panels, 4 hex keys to loosen the mounting plates and the whole thing would lift off as one unit. The Outpost HD is fixed height and would put a RT Tent at the level of the cab. The Overhaul HD is adjustable height with the minimum height just below the cab. The height adjustment is easy but more like a 15 minute job - I raise mine when hauling long lumber or canoe. If you're not in a rush, REI has a couple of Yakima sales each year that are typically about 20% off.

Likely outside of the $ you're looking to drop based on your needs, but I'll throw it out there... Truck Covers USA rolling tonneau with the American Rack setup. I love this b/c I literally can remove the bars in 30 seconds or less, they just snap off (unless I lock them with a key which adds a few seconds). The tonneau retracts into it's canister which is 5"x5" so you lose a few inches of bed space at the top, but still have the utility of the majority of the bed with lockable, water resistant storage. I love how easy it is to put on/take off the bars when I'm hauling larger things such as furniture, appliances, etc.,

Wait a minute, you can attach side panels to attach rescue boards, shovels, e.t.c? Also can this handle a tent on top? You have me thinking this is simpler than I thought. Btw, your truck looks exactly like mine..

I forgot to mention that I need it to handle a the weight of a tent on top. Love how you are able to carry all the kayaks.. need to see more how you're doing that. After looking closer, it looks like you carry two kayaks total?
I carry two now but I'd like to be able to carry four or five.

Yeah, with the Prinsu over the cab (with "stackers") I can do 4 boats on the cab, then I can easily carry 4-5 more in the bed / on the racks. Somewhere I've got a picture of 8 boats on the truck, running shuttles for whitewater trips.

Likely still overkill for what you're looking for, but the tonneau does have the capacity to hold over 500lbs if memory serves, though you'd probably want to add a 3rd bar to be on the safe side, the tracks welded into the rails on the cover make that easy to slide another set of towers and bars on. Good luck finding what you're after!

I agree on the Overhaul HD. It's easy to adjust, super durable and also more secure than most racks out there. No one wants to walk out to to their truck to find someone stole their rack with nothing more than 15 minutes and a 10mm wrench.

Something else to keep an eye out for: Home Depot had a sale recently that advertised 25% off. I looked at the price and it was just a few dollars less than what you see the Overhaul HD going for everyday. Then, I looked a little closer and they actually included the crossbars. So, I ended up saving about $250. The sales are out there, but they don't happen often.

agree on the sales for Yakima being few and far between - I presume that Yakima only allows sales at given times for their authorized dealers. I happened to find a Re-box sale on RackWarehouse.com and it ended up cheaper than the sale price at REI (no tax, free shipping). Here's a random video showing the sidebars:

I don't have a RTT but it's certainly sturdy once everything is tightened up. FWIW, Yakima states 500 lb on-road and 300 lb off-road

This seems perfect for my needs with a lot of flexibility. Should be fine for a tent. Anyone know of any bins customized to use up the space back and front of the wheel wells. I an thinking of a DIY flooring on top of that to widen the floor width by raising flush with the wheel well.

That's a good point. Unless there is a way to secure it to prevent stealing.

On a tacoma do you recommend the 60 inch or 68 inch crossbars?

You got a good deal. It's running for $500 without the crossbars at rackwarehouse.com. I found this including crossbars for $800

There is this also but fixed height and includes the crossbars.
But I like the adjustable height of the Overhaul and the locking feature.
I think I'll also have to buy a kit for the rail system?

For reference, the photo below has the 60" crossbars.

68" bars are just a tad wider than the truck itself.

Always go wider with crossbars when in doubt.

Perfect. That picture helps a lot. I will go with the 60 inch. About to order from rack warehouse.

Nice setup! I had the Yakima Bedrock on my 15 extended cab. Great setup for bikes, ok for kayaks. Scratched up the corners of the cab a bit hauling creek boats that shifted forward on a shuttle road. Thinking about going with the Overhaul or similar for my 20 dclb. Makes hauling long boats a little easier.

Yea, I went with the 60s, too. The 68" bars would be fine, if you needed the space. I think the 60s are perfect, though, putting with width very close to the top of your truck cab.

I went with the Over the Softopper Bed Rack with my tent on top. Full access to the bed and love it.

The tonneau cover should be the retrax pro with tracks. The yakima overhaul and fits on it and or without it.
