    Hey Everyone,

Just got my fresh RCI skid back from a local shop from getting painted. They said they prepped it and than sprayed it with bed liner. However the bed liner didnt cure proper and the paint is chipping/flaking off in corners and edges down to the steel.

Any thoughts or expierence with this? The Bed liner they used was Dupli color. Now looking online looks like they are known to have bad batches and wrecking the bond with the primer. Im going to sand down the weak areas and try something else. On the flat portion of the skid the bed liner doesnt look like bedliner but at least seems stable.

Will throw some photos up tomorrow

Why use bedliner on a skid?

Thought it be a more durable finish than just paint. Was going to go with powder coat but I heard you can really touch it up as good as touching paint up

In the first photo ive grinded and sanded the paint away. Seems the etching primer did its job mostly except for the corners its as if nothing was ever there. The second is on the backside showing what it was like before.

What would ya reccommend for putting on the skid?

If you just got it back from the paint shop, why don't you make them fix it?

They did try to fix it, they painted it once and the paint ran off as it was water. The second time, they grinded it a bit more and got to the current result. So just going to tackle it myself

The shop in the summer recoated my steel loght bar with the same product and it came through with flying colors and is durable as heck. This time around with the skid, the rubber and everything else that makes up the bed spray litterally just brushed off.

Also feeling like just trem clading it, a shop wants 100$ for powdercoat which is a little rich for just coating a skid

The spray can DIY liners like this require good prep and then a lot of curing time for the product to harden. I've seen it soft for 3-4 days when the temperatures are low like this time of the year, and a good week before it's fully cured. In the summer with higher temps it still seems to need 24-48hrs to cure enough to be remotely durable, and another couple days to reach max durability. It's also tricky to lay down, 4-5 light coats are necessary with a bit of dry time between. Go too heavy on a coat or too soon and it will run or bubble. Or if you coat it and come back a few hours later and decide to try another coat.... bad idea also, it then likes to wrinkle up and not lay right.

The way the finish looks on yours there was too much time between coats, and then not let enough time to cure completely.

Was it sandblasted first to clean the surface and give the coating something to bite onto?

I coat mine with 3M Professional Grade Rubberized Undercoating 03584, lasts longer than other coatings, easy to reapply, found it on sale.

Thanks Rentless Fab for the great info! That might just explain what happened here

No, it wasn't sand blasted. They said they did sand it before working on it, but no sand blasting. The ecthing primer is great on the flat metal, just not the corners. So after reading around a lot, Im just going to get some more etching primer and use Rostolluem or similiar. Easy touch ups and should hold up to the up and coming salty roads

Wish I didn't live in the salt capital of Canada, spraying the skid wouldn't be as much of a concern hahaha
