Has anyone painted plywood with bed liner? I made some drawers for my bed, and am considering what coating to use. I may just go with a few coats of poly, but it would be nice to have it blend in with bed liner, but worried it might peel and that it may not do as good a job keeping moisture / water out...

I have an enclosed bed rack with side doors and an rtt, but no rear door. It is pretty well protected but some water does get into the bed area.

Are you thinking Line-X, Rhino? If so, I'd just go in and ask them. If you are thinking Walmart stuff, I've had that stuff chip off of itself.

i have used the rustoleum bed liner on plywood and it works really well. Make sure to prep your surface really well, sand paper to ruoghen and clean, and make sure to use thick coats.

It will work fine. We spray things at work on wooden pallets all the time and they hold up forever as long as we don’t destroy them in other ways.

Just use sheathing grade plywood. I use a 4x8 sheet trimmed as my bed pad, in florida no topper, no paint

Does it form a membrane? I need it to seal the boxes to keep them watertight - especially at the joints...

It will seal small cracks fine, but I would still use liquid nails on the seams before I screwed anything together.

red blue or green? blue is okay for minor water contact after the glue cures, but red titebond isnt very good with moisture, in my experience. green is similar to blue but longer setup time, if gluing big projects up.

also build your box with big enough tolerances so that you can still operate when they absorb a little bit of water.

    Red :annoyed:

Well. We’ll see how it goes I guess. At least this is only a quasi-temporary setup. Just needed something to improve organization for an upcoming trip.

Nothing too fancy. Bashed them out in a day. Need to throw on another drawer face to the wider drawer on the right. No sliders but seems to work good enough - hopefully I can keep the water out so they don’t bind up, among other obvious reasons. I’ll add a drip edge over the drawers and add weather stripping between the faces and end of the boxes.

haha ya it will still work great. Just won't hold up to moisture over time very well. Red is best for interior work. blue is better for something that may see some moisture like cutting boards and wooden bowls and utensils, and wooden boxes in the back of your truck!

My carpentry advice, (which is admittedly much better and more informed than my mechanic advice) if you are looking to have a protected exterior wood product, you should get some Sikkens CETOL DEK. (https://srdstain.com/sikkens-cetol-dek-finish/) I use this on exterior decks, hand rails, furniture, and other exterior wood products in Grand County CO and all over CO. about 8,000ft elevation on average, intense sun and weather, holds up like a champ.

Sand down your box well with 80 grit then 120, no need for anything more and apply 2 coats initially. EDIT:(save yourself some time and just do 80grit then wipe down the box with a wet rag, this will "pop the grain" and hide a lot of the 80 grit marks. let it dry and coat)

Then next year lightly sand it again with 120 and apply one more coat.

The next year do the same thing, and now you've got years of protection.

Just make sure too keep up on a re-coat about every 5 years after the first 2 years and you'll have a bullet proof shiny looking box.

You could stain the box prior to coating. or leave it natural
