The paint on my roof was completely shot with tons of rust everywhere that was pitting. I wire brushed it, sanded it, sprayed it with rust reformer, primered it, sanded it smooth, got it perfect and ready for the basecoat. It took several hours each day last week. I ordered matching touchup paint (it was NOT cheap) in rattle cans and followed the directions to a T. It looks like crap, even with the clear coat over it. The basecoat came out like a hammered/textured finish, not to mention I don't have a garage so I did the painting outside.

So either I order more overpriced matching paint (black sand pearl, Toyota color 209) and sand each layer of metallic basecoat even though the directions say not to, or pay the same amount of money and paint it with something like brush-on bed liner. The truck has a shell on it, and it wouldn't work to coat just the roof of the shell seeing as it's all one piece, so it would be just the roof of the cab. Does anyone have any pictures of a Tacoma with the just the roof coated with bed liner? Google image search is not helping me out with this. Will it look like crap? Should I just start over using another $70 of matching paint? What about a different color for contrast?

IM in the same boat. my roof and hood looked like crap when i bought it. I painted my hood and grille matte black with some Rutoleum rattle cans. they turned out ok, but i might try something different for the roof. Bed liner seems like a good option for matte black, i like the look with the Desert sand color of my truck.

If you if you taken care of the rust issue, have the roof wrapped. I think it would look pretty cool in a black and white checkerboard pattern, a carbon fiber pattern.

    I would Line-X it.
That way not maint moving forward. I hate cleaning and sealing my roof. I need to get mine done to save me the hassel.

Personally, unless you plan on doing the whole truck, I wouldn't just bedliner just the top. With a black truck, it would just look like faded black paint. I would buy the paint and price shop around for local auto paint shops for the labor. Keep in mind that bedliner would be a pain in the @ss to clean due to the gritty texture.
