    Hey guys,

I bought a used bed extender today, and have found the mounting hardware I need but need guidance on how to mount it. I see that normally you’d just drill it in to mount it, but my short bed doesn’t seem to have the bed set in a way to do so. This ( AMP Research 74608-01A Quick Mount Bracket Kit for 1982-2021 Models https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004LZUPC8?_encoding=UTF8 ) is what I’m looking at, and the product description at 4 inches makes it way too big to mount on this rail that curves at 2 inches.

Any advice? Am I just overthinking it?

I have a 01 short bed. I bought the AMP extender used, but I bought new OEM Toyota mounts that fit with no drilling. Let me try to find the OEM Toyota part number.

return the AMP research "universal kit" as it's not really universal.

get the Toyota one @Krogers128 mentioned, I have the same one and it's just a screw in option that replaces the tie down screws. no extra holes to drill

How does that work? My tie downs are 4-5 inches away from the bed extender should mount. Also, I need the tie downs, even more so with the bed extender.

so here’s one side of the truck bed bracket. Other is the same. It bends around the bed kinda so you retain the factory tie down.

That's pretty slick, and I imagine it'll be a lot sturdier than the AMP with only two holes drilled. I think my only concern at this point is that I was hoping to secure the bed extender. I ordered a locking tailgate handle the other night, and the AMP I ordered only can be removed from one side so it is secured when the tailgate is closed. Is there anyway to that with this hardware?

It is slick, and OEM so correct fitment, good hardware, and tbh it's cheap for what you get! Not much option on security I don't think. I don't always have mine in, only when I'll be needing it. I suppose a locking tailgate handle would solve your question though, as It can only be removed when tail gate is opened.

It looks great, but I am worries about theft in my area. Why does the tailgate need to be open to remove it? It looks like it would come right out whenever needed.

Thanks for answering all my questions haha

once you get yours together you’ll see. Basically the rollers on the end have flat spots so it only goes in and comes out straight up and down. So when it’s in the bed with the tail gate closed, you cannot lift it straight out.

Pretty sure these are gonna upload sideway idk why

you could always attach a bike lock cable to the tie down and the bed extender, although the bed extender does come apart easily and in pieces

the AMP one isn't really going to protect it either if someone just rips it out.

the locking tailgate and if you have a cap or lockable tonneau is the best option to "deter" but nothing will prevent a thief if they really want it bad enough :D

Yes, those are the ones I got from Toyota that Kroger posted. They fit good and snug, easy to install. Just need Philips #3 screwdriver. I also installed the Pop & Lock add on to my tailgate handle. It can lock now with key.

I realize it's an old thread but a closed mouth don't eat, so here I go. Did the OEM Toyota bad extender mounts work with a amp bed extender? Also did the amp extender have the same style pivot point? To where it's only removable if the tailgate is open and the extender is In a upward position. Any help would be greatly appreciated , and time in Money saved. Thanks

Yes, the OEM Toyota bed extender mounts worked great with the AMP bed extender. The kit comes with 2 Toyota brackets and longer screws.
Yes, it has the pivot point, will only remove with tailgate open.
That is the reason I put the PopNLock at the same time, so I lock the tailgate so somebody won't take the bed extender.
    Hope that helps.
