I apologize in advance for another tire size thread. I just returned from a 6k journey with the family over Christmas break. We went from NC to Moab UT. I wanted to get the kids out to see the world. Sooo bought some Cooper SST PROs 265 75 16 and TRD Tacoma Pro Rims. When I got out to UT I was having all kinds of clearance issues. Dragging this hitting that. Keep in mind most of the trails I hit were deemed "Easy" on multiple trail guides. My local Discount Tire is willing to upgrade to the next size 285/75/R16 for a 80 bucks. My question is will the truck be derivable on road until I can afford a lift in a couple months? I have seen guys say they have done it but I don't think I have seen anyone with the SST Pros at this size on a stock TRD offroad suspension. My goal is in a couple months to thrown a Kings Full suspension, just wanted to get everyone's take. Thanks in advance and sorry if this has already been discussed. Also I will be hopefully post some pictures from the trip here in the near future.

I don't think that tire will work with that size stock rim without spacers no matter what lift you have

Why not wait until you get the lift to cash in on the upgrade? My only other thought is will an extra 0.6 inches of clearance you will get from the larger tires make that much of a difference on those trails?

Yea.... I have a feeling that I am getting away with a pretty sweet deal on the tires. I think that it is a once in lifetime exchange/upgrade at minimal cost or I would definitely wait until the lift was on. The other driving factors is that I will have a brand new set of tires instead of a set that I just put 7k miles on. I am really puzzled on the right move here.

do those come in 255/85/16? I think they may.... those would have a better chance of fitting and are actually even a bit taller than the 285.

Yea... I am not sure either I have the TRD pro wheels on it I am hoping the difference in offset on those would make it clear possibly.

Pro has stock fox shocks. They clear with no issues.

They would have cleared with the pro rims alone. Nice truck though! Love my pro. Only problem with 285 is they absolutely kill the performance of the 3.5. Crushes mileage and power, but they sure look sweet!

Regular suspension lift does not give more clearance on tires. Alignment and trim here tuck there does. When you suspension compresses(i.e. hit a bump) your wheels go back to stock height ect. The only concern I would see other than minor trimming is the wheels. Do you know what the backspacing is on the trd pro wheels?

    Suspension first

Then upgrade tire size to still allow articulation in the wheel well.

You’ve limited the functionality of your suspension by stuffing those over sized tires into the wells.

If you are more interested in looks; keep stock suspension and install strut spacers, rear blocks and wheel spacers. You should have enough room for that size tire w/out cutting.

That's not why they clear. They clear, because the offset on the pro rim is more than the Offroad or Sport. If those are 285's it's still going to rub at full turn on the trails. You're still running tires two inches bigger than stock in the same size wheel well as the other truck.

It's been shown multiple times on the forum the Pro has very little lift over a stock OR or Sport. It's nothing in the rear and 1/2" to an 1" in the front. Usually 1/2".

Having gone straight from stock to 285's, I would recommend against it.
I love the look, but they really kill the power and drivabilty on a truck that is already sketchy at best on power.

Yea I bought the taco for functionality of offroad. I had a 94 pick up with 33x12.50s and 8 inches of lift on it. It was a dog but let's be honest here no one is winning drags with a taco regardless. Millage is a going to be less but with my drive to work being less than 5 miles if I don't work from home. It's not a huge deal. I think they may have changed the frame a little bit in the 19 models because I no longer see it really coming into the wheel well. My biggest decision in going this rout was to get all the upgrades as well the upgraded suspension and the fact I wouldn't have to do a CMC.

I too am wondering if something changed on the frames/cab mounts.
My 285's are nowhere near the cab mount and I'm only on 2" of lift.

It doesn't look as if anything has changed. A guy at work brought his 2nd Gen to lunch and we both look at the wheel wells. Its the same as it was before. If I can remember next time I'll get pics and post side by side.

There actually is a little more clearance on the wheel wells themselves cab mount is in the same location. I was worried about doing CMC when I bought my truck, after it was done you cant even tell without knowing what exactly to look at. No worries man. If you want them to fit they will. As long as your backspace is less than 5.5. Do what makes you happy. A lot less 3rd gens than 2nd gens needed to do CMC for some reason. But as I said. Once it's done(properly) a toyota tech wouldn't even know unless he was looking at them side by side and comparing
