I have been gathering all the tools to change out my front bearings. (2008 Prerunner) The one item I don't have is a bearing splitter to get the bearing off. Being a budget minded person.. (damn near broke) I was curious what others have bought. I have been looking and there are many options out there in the "cheap" department and then high dollar ones... I wont be using it often but don't want something that is going to break on the first use. I am also not sure what size I need. And before anybody says it.. I am not trying to cut the old one off. I have a press. Would like to hear from those who have done this, what you used etc..

Thanks but you must have missed the budget part. :) I'm trying to keep it under $50.00. Love to have that kit but I looked at that earlier when i saw it in a thread you did and it was in the hundreds.

Most if not all of the chain auto parts stores have free tool rental.

Thanks for the info. I can do the repair myself, that's not a problem. Truck only has 80K and the bearing just started to shake rattle and grind so I "assume" its just the bearing... I have all the parts ready. I just don't have a splitter and need to find one. I looked at loaner tools at the big box stores.. Autozone, Advanced.. and they don't offer this tool.

How about a couple of thin chisels 180* apart and a nice hammer?

Well... I would rather not chance hacking it up... I hear what you're saying... the thought crossed my mind. I know it can be done that way but I would rather use the right tool for the job.. Just want to find the right tool at a decent price. (plus... like scars.. new tools are cool) I have always wanted a Hydraulic press and just bought one because of this. So I am interested in getting the right splitter. For the price of a complete assembly, I figure buying the tools it equals out and I'll have the tools forever.

Not sure if they wiped the system for inactive members but I actually joined up in 2008 when I got my truck and participated for a few years then drifted away. Today I couldn't sign in so made a new account. Regardless, thanks for your input and suggestions.

    Did my few months back.
After pressing bearing out . Bottom sleeve stuck good and Bearing splitter didn't work so I make 2 cut on the sleeve opposites end and tap it loose with flat head screwdriver.

I do appreciate the advice... but looking for suggestions on the right splitter at a decent price.. I see what you did... so if you had to do it again would you just cut and chisel is again? All my attachments are a bit large so I dont want to get into the machined parts of the shaft.

Thanks for the link.. I usually avoid anything from Harbor Freight. It's not a tool I will use often, but I have bought things there in the past that never made it through the first use.

I'm not sure I'm following. You want to stay cheap, but you bought a press JUST for this job? you want to stay cheap but avoid HF tools??? this isn't adding up....

seriously though I just did mine in the fall. I talked to my buddy who is a tech for Audi and he said they grind and chisel. I've got the actual splitter but I took his advice and made a groove with my grinder. A couple good whacks and it comes right off with no damage to the hub.

I've been wanting a press for years and this was a good excuse considering buying the parts and doing it myself its coming out even $$$ wise over buying a completed hub assembly at $275.00ish. And I'll have the tools forever. My point was I wanted to get something on the lower end pricewise but something that would last through the job. Pretty much all Harbor Freight tools sucks.. end of story there. What I have decided to do is forgo the splitter and do just what you said and was already suggested and just cut it off.

Actually that cheese cutter is not bad for the money. Still holding up after many uses. Just FYI
