In my experience a wider tire is better for sand use. Weather or not you air them down they will tend to float better than a narrow tire. Along with that the more side wall you have the better the tire works when airing down. I don’t know what size you’re thinking about but try to stay with load range C (less weight is better) and a good all terrain tread will be just fine.

I was looking at a 265/75/17 with an aggressive thread.

I have had amazing luck with Duratracs. Air them down and you should be golden. I've had KOs in the sand and they work okay too, but they grab (and fling) the gravel the County uses around here (plus they can be horrible to balance), so I won't buy them again. On my buggy, I run BFG MTs. They work great in sand, but they would be horrible for most other Tacoma duties. Duratrac for the win (in my opinion).

PS: Got out of some super soft sand with a 10k# Sportsmobile in Baja with Toyo MTs, so those work great too. However, the Toyos showed significant wear after only 8k miles, so that's a non-starter for me (your mileage may vary).

I have Hankook Dynapro ATM's in 265/75/16 on my 2nd gen and love them. Nice and aggressive, float well on the sand when aired down to 15psi, and comfortable on the road itself. Plus they're cheap lol.

have used a few different ATs (KO,Firestones,Sumitomos), none better/worse. As mentioned aired down, I've done as low as about 10psi in softer sand. Also like CO2 for airing up.

Regardless of whatever tires you end up with I'd bring a good air compressor that connects straight to the battery so that you can air down, and a pair of TredPros/Maxtrax for if you ever get stuck.

I think a lot of people out here like duratracs for the sand.

It honestly depends on the "pack" of the sand you are driving on. For instance, if youre on Daytona beach, you can drive a ford focus with bald tires on it and be fine. Any AT tire will do well enough when aired down properly. You should concentrate more on what type of on-road performance you want out of it.

Honestly, the best tire is a Highway tire. You don't really want an aggressive tread because it's prone to dig instead of float. Air down to at least 20 and you'll be fine.

That being said, I went with Cooper ST Maxx in the "skinny" 255/80/r17 and they do fine aired down to 20.

Cooper has a good video about it as well of your a visual learner like myself

I don't really fish in the summer off the beach. Spring and fall are the two big seasons for striper and drum.

Running tires that came on my truck.... 17” Open Road tires aired down to 18 lbs.

Plenty of soft dune entres here on Delaware Beaches..with no problems when going out for beach surf fishing.7:mudding::mudding:

Couldn’t agree more! I have st max as well in 255. Never got stuck other than the time I did it on purpose just to test out the xbull tracks aka the cheap version of maxtrax.

Honesty regardless of the tire once the hole is to deep your tires will eventually be going up against a huge wall. Always have the extra gear or friend to pull you out.

On my 2nd gen I run 265/75r16 Falken Wildpeaks at3 and air down to 18-20. I haven't had any issues. That's on NC sand, pretty soft overall.

I think they’re ok but I am a big fan of my wildpeak at3. Also hankook dynapro atm are a great choice. I do think a all terrain is better suited for sand than a mud terrain the more tire surface that’s in contact with the sand surface helps the tire stay on top of the sand. Bigger lugs are designed to clear mud from the tread and dig in. In this case you don’t want to dig in you just want to stay on top. Throttle control when starting is a big factor in not getting stuck and if you have momentum maintain that momentum. I used to spend a lot of time in the dune/ beach at pismo and run my truck in 2wd most of the time- especially closer to the beach itself.
