I haven't seen this yet on my truck, I would contact your service department if this is a persistent issue.

Yes, it's normal when the ignition switch (key or button) is in the ON position but the engine is not running.

The reason for this is when the engine is not running, there is an imbalance between the battery voltage and the alternator voltage.

When the engine is running and the alternator is charging the battery, the battery and alternator should have the same voltage.

If your alternator goes bad and is not putting out enough voltage or if your battery is bad and is not charging, there will be a difference in voltages and the charging system warning will appear.

Edit: This could also indicate that your tranny fluid is low.
(Sorry, I just had to throw that in there.)

Mine does it to when I turn on the accessory mode when the motor isn't running. I think it is just a warning so you don't leave it on or somethings

Holy smokes. Is this your first car? If so, you get a pass. If not, smh. Owners manual. Read it. Or just drive any other car since like 1996.

Definitely low on trans fluid. Check the u-bolt torque too.

There is no voltage coming out of the alternator when the I gnition is on and the motor isn't running. If your alternator dies it will no longer put any voltage out when the motor is running. Thus the vehicle is running purely off of the battery if that happens. The truck monitors the voltage and because the ignition is still on and the ECU doesn't see any voltage above ~13.4-14.4 volts it throws a check charging system light. The warning also won't come on if your battery has a bad cell or lower voltage. As long as the truck can still turn over and alternator is performing correctly you won't get any warning. The only reason you'll get that warning if the battery is bad or voltage is too low is because your turning the ignition on and the truck can't turn over. Basically it's just letting you know that the ignition is turned on and it's not seeing the battery being charged

I did that and now the car has driveshaft vibes. Taking it in to the dealer.

Mine does that if I have it on listening to the radio too long without the engine running. Nothing wrong, it's just warning you that the battery is discharging.

Pretty douchey response, I have to say. I've never had a vehicle with a display like the Tacoma has, so I can see how someone might be concerned if they saw this. Last time I checked there weren't many vehicles that had these types of displays 20 years ago (since you referenced 1996). But this seems to be the norm around here, probably because most of the douches who make comments like this are the younger crowd who have no couth or tact and think they're better than the rest of us.

Lol, sorry I should of been more clear
sorry about that. I fixed it up. I was outside sanding for a few hours. Not sure if it was the vibration from the sander or the dust particles I inhaled
