Im replacing the battery in my truck and I’ve heard about the problems it can cause with the computer. I found something called a battery memory saver. $10 to $20 on Amazon. They use a little 9 volt battery and you plug it into your cigarette/auxiliary port. It’s supposed to save the memory in the computer so you have no problems. Anyone use these things? Do they preserve the memory? Comments?

I've replaced my battery once and had the ground strap off a couple of times. The only thing I had to do was resync the windows which was a 2 min. operation. Maybe your truck has add-ons that are affected.

I read here on TW about numerous problems caused on various Tacoma’s when the battery is removed. Everything from rough and uneven idle, problems starting, shifting and on and on. The memory slowly resets it self but I’d like to avoid all that. Sounds like the memory saver may avoid all that.

I never experienced the rough idle, hard start on my single vVTi 1GR-FE Tacomaa or my wifes dual vVTi 1GR-FE 4Runner when pulling battery.

Here is an example of what I’m talking about

    • Features:
    • Automotive computer memory retaining tools designed to maintain the memory of the on-board vehicle computer (CCU) when the power source (battery) is disconnected.
    • Use of these tools when changing or interrupting the power source prevents loss of certain drivability codes, keyless entry codes, digital radio setting, cellular phone settings and other memory related functions. Prevents loss of radio function on anti-theft radio systems.
    • Use with 9 volt alkaline battery (not included)

It's your dough, but you're over thinking this. The truck ECM will relearn the previous parameters, with no ill effects. After disconnecting the battery in my truck, then reconnecting the battery, the truck will quickly die after the "first" attempt to start. Starts after second attempt. I didn't even lose radio presets the last time I disconnected my battery. This not a big deal. Replace the battery, then go for a drive.

Never had an issue in any vehicle. That being said, out of convenience I built one of them for a few dollars out of parts I had laying around just to save radio presets and such in my older cars.

For real, even $10 for a 9v connector, a cig lighter plug, and a diode is a huge ripoff.

    Working on them
They work I have used em and the other way I have done it so I would not have to deal with a radio code was I hooked up another 12 volt battery to the terminals then removed the old one no issues at all. only thing is some cars, trucks the 12 volt lighter socket turns off when key is off

If ya use one of the battery saver devices, just turn the key on before pulling the battery.
