Has anyone used a 27 vs a 27R battery? From what I can tell the poles are just reversed on the "R". Are the cables long enough to do the "27" if you turn the battery 180 degrees?

I think you mean group 27 and group 27F (F being the original "reversed pole" battery) FYI.... the standard group 27 battery flipped around, stock cables WILL NOT REACH, trust me i tried.

I went with a 24F battery to replace my original 27F battery, its slightly smaller, but had better CCA's and is WAY more readily available than the 27F battery found on trucks with the towing package (24F is the same size battery found on trucks without the towing package)

I went with the Everstart MAXX 24F from walmart. Cheapest 24F around, with the best warranty (3 years full replacement, 2 years prorated) and its walmart so no mater where i am in the country a walmart would probably be close by. Also the battery gets good long term reviews.

Yeah, but don't you need a bigger battery when towing?

All 3rd gens come with a 24f, regardless of package. Smaller block but not by much.

I had no problem finding a 27 group battery from Advance. And no, the cables won't reach if you get the non "F" one.

Really? I figured that you had to have a bigger bad for the towing package. Interesting. So if a 24 has the same cca as a 27, is there any advantage to a 27? Like does it last longer per charge or overall life of the battery is longer.

Not really, towing is hard on the transmission and engine but the couple brake lights won't make any difference to your electrical system.

I've been running that battery (24f) from Walmart since 3/12. It's still going strong, I'll probably throw a new one in before winter unless it dies before then. If a battery lasts 5 years, it's been good to you and it's time to replace it, that's just my opinion though.

Many 24F and 27F batteries are comparable in CCA; it's the reserved minutes where the difference comes into play. A 27F will have longer reserved minutes specs. You would want this so you can run electrical with the car off the longest. You definitely do not want to get a non "F" battery as the positive post will be too close to the fender - a ground source. Generally, when you install a battery, you want the positive post as far away from a ground source as possible.

My 24F started dragging last night... by this morning my truck would barely turn over fast enough to start. I went to Walmart and grabbed another Everstart Maxx for $93.76 plus tax. I removed the battery and took another vehicle to go get it, so I got my $12 core charge back at the register. It's pretty hard to beat that, 3 year free replacement, plus an additional 2 year prorated warranty. My old battery lasted 5.5 years (3/12 to 9/17).
