So I just bought an 07 access cab v6 auto base model. So far I am happy with it, I don’t use it for any type of 4x4ing I basically just drive in the city and highway. I’m just curious now what exactly is the difference between the TRD models and the base that I have. Is it ONLY suspension upgrades on those? My truck came with newer bf Goodrich KO2 which is nice, I’m thinking this thing is gonna be great in the snow as well. Wondering if I’m missing out and should have gone for the TRD sport.

TRD Sport is mostly just an appearance package. It does have different suspension, but I don’t think there is a noticeable difference in ride quality in the 2nd gen Sport over SR/SR5. Other than that, you get color matched grill, fender flares, and bumper, turn signal mirrors, hood scoop, wheels, and decals.

The TRD offroad came with suspension, wheels and tires, A-Trac and rear locker. Both packages came with the 110v outlet in the bed.

If you can live without those options, then you probably did well buying the lower trim. I have an SR5, and it has done everything I need it to do. I would have liked to have the Offroad for the rear locker, but up to this point I have never needed it.

Yea those were my thoughts too so far, I can live without those things. Eventually I will get a newer one and when I do I’ll go for the TRD

The one other difference that wasn’t mentioned is, the base model often has 5 lug wheels vs the prerunner/TRD models having 6 lug wheels.

True, but OP’s truck is 4x4 so it is a 6 lug.

Slap some trd off road decals on the bed and you will be half way there.

You get the tow package: up graded battery & alternator, oil cooler, external transmission cooler, tow hitch, prewired trailer connecter.

Although most TRDs come with the tow package, it's a separate option and is not always included in the TRD package.

I wasn’t aware they even made a “base” model 4x4, at that point isn’t it upgraded and no longer considered a base vehicle? Or is a “base” Tacoma just any Tacoma without the SR5/TRD package. I’m curious.

I think “base” is SR, which was available as a 4x4. I think you could even get the V6 as an option, although most came with the 2.7. The SR5 got some more goodies and options like fog lights, alloy wheels, keyless entry. It also came with body matched front bumper and fender flares and chrome rear bumper.

Have the same truck just like OP. Have OEM fog lights, remote start, 2011 oem grille, and all I need is a OEM hood w/scoop. I think with all that I should slap some decals and call it a day (@Kotah) lol

I bought an 09 base 4x4. Have literally made it a TRD clone with a mixture of Sport,Offroad, and Pro parts that have been installed on it. Just made it my own.

My base model ('14) has hand winder windows, manual door locks, no cruise and no intermittent wipers. I'm good with all that de-contented stuff, but it's taking me a while to adjust to its absence.

    1. Welcome to TacomaWorld!

    2. You can easily add intermittent wipers and cruise.

Good to know, I wasn’t aware the base model Tacoma (SR) had so many options. Personally I like Color matched parts that come on the TRD sport. I’m not a fan of chrome. I still have one last chrome part on my TRD OR to get rid of. That’s the rear bumper.

Yeah, I didn’t care for the chrome bumper either. I used some aerosol bed liner on mine, and I’m pretty happy with the results. It has a nice textured finish and has held up well for several months.

    Thank you. This is my 4th Taco. Previously owned a '99, a '2000 and a 2006.

The two features you mention are the two I am missing the most. Do you have some links?
